Does your learner like to solve fun mysteries? Well, let them put on their detective hat and get to work using their 5th grade math skills! Mini Math Mysteries are a fun 'game-like' activity to practice different math skills. They follow a simple elimination structure where learners will be using the answers to the math questions to eliminate possibilities. This is an ongoing class, so you are free to join in and leave as you please. At the beginning of each class, learners will hear a short story to preface the mystery they will be solving for the day. Then, it is time for our math detectives to get to work! Learners will answer a variety of questions based on different math content (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, place value, rounding, telling time, missing addends, etc.) to solve the mystery. They will first solve the math questions, and then they will look for their answers in the boxes and eliminate the boxes with a matching answer on our shared screen. After answering all questions, only one image will remain (that image will contain a number that didn't match any of the answers to the questions) and that box is the solution to our mystery! Some of the math concepts we will be working on include: -Addition with Regrouping (large numbers to 10,000s place) -Subtraction with Regrouping (large numbers to 10,000s place) -Basic Division Facts -Basic Multiplication Facts -Mixed Operation Word Problems -Adding Decimals -Subtracting Decimals -Decimal Place Value -Rounding Decimals -Order of Operations (PEMDAS) -Multiplying whole numbers with decimals (tenths) -Divide four-digit numbers by single-digit numbers -Multiplying large numbers by single-digit numbers -Long multiplication (multiply double-digit by double-digit numbers, triple-digit numbers by single-digit numbers, and triple-digit by double-digit numbers) -Place Value of the Underlined Digit -Division with remainders (double-digit and triple-digit numbers divided by single-digit numbers) -Rounding Large Numbers -Word Problems Week of August 5: Case of the Beach Burger Blunder (Multiplication & Division) Week of August 12: Case of the Backpack Bandit (Word Problems) Week of August 19: Case of the Cafeteria Chaos (Word Problems) Week of August 26: Case of the Crayon Criminal (Division Facts 1-12) Week of September 2: Case of the Kidnapped Principal (Subtraction with Regrouping up to 1,000) Week of September 9: Case of the Book Burglar (Multiplication Facts 1-12) Week of September 16: Case of the Tricky Teacher (Place Value of Underlined Digit) Week of September 23: Case of the School Hallway Hoax (Rounding Numbers) Week of September 30: Case of the Falling Apples (Multiplication of 2-Digit and 3-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers) Week of October 7: Case of the Haunted House (Adding and Subtracting Within 1 Million) Week of October 14: Case of the Smelly Spells (Word Problems) Week of October 21: Case of the Monster Mix Up (Dividing 2-Digit/3-Digit/4-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers) Week of October 28: Case of the Halloween Heist (Area and Perimeter of Shapes) Week of November 4: Case of the Frozen Feast (Algebraic Reasoning) Week of November 11: Case of the Cornucopia Criminal (Addition and Subtraction) Week of November 18: Case of the Thanksgiving Thief (Long Multiplication) Week of November 25: NO CLASS!! Week of December 2: Case of the Selfish Elf (Long Division) Week of December 9: Case of Rudolph's Nose (Subtraction within One Million) Week of December 16: Case of the Zombie Elves (Multiplying/Dividing by Numbers Ending in Zeroes) Week of December 23: NO CLASS!!! I look forward to meeting your learner in class! Now, let's have FUN learning math!! See you in the classroom! :)
