For the LGBTQ+ community, June is Pride Month, usually a time of celebration. We flock to our nearest cities to join in the festivities and experience the beautiful diversity of the Pride parade. In 2020, we stayed home to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. Even though Pride parades are once again returning to cities around the world, we can still celebrate together in our homes.

Let's explore the many groups you might see attending Pride parades around the world, from the bedazzled Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the winged Angel Action activists. We'll touch on current events and how they impact Pride celebrations. We'll discuss the history of the Pride parade and the organizations participating then and today. Then, through a mix of images/video clips from popular media and from past real-life Pride parades, we'll watch a virtual Pride parade unfold together.

Come dressed in your rainbows, bring out your Pride flags, and celebrate the beauty of who you are!

Orientación para padres
Pride is a time when the LGBTQ+ community often revels in reclaiming terms that have been used to hurt us in the past. I will identify groups by the names and identities they have reclaimed in a respectful way, such as the Dykes on Bikes motorcycle club and the Pansy Patrol. Within this context, these words are a celebration of a community that has overcome many hurdles but continues to fight for equality. We will touch (lightly) on some current events, such as anti-drag laws in the US and police violence at some global Pride events, and how those events directly impact Pride parades and marches. This is not the focus of this class, but is used to emphasize that Pride is a celebration of not only who we are, but what we have overcome and are still facing as a community.

Along with being an experienced teacher, Girl Scout leader, and mentor, I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community, raising three children who also identify within the LGBTQ+ rainbow. Many of the pictures used in this virtual parade come from my 10+ years of attendance of the Atlanta Pride Parade and Pride Festival.
