Evaluación
In-class feedback is my preferred method of assessment in comparison to grades; however, if the parent prefers, I am more than happy to supply a grade using either the A,B,C,D, F or Standard-based grading of 4,3,2,1 scales. Exams are also available if a parent prefers. These are "graded" and students receive individualized feedback. Please request this at the onset of the course! Common Core or Standards Alignment is available upon request.

Beatrix Potter, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Robert Frost, Charles Dickens: all writers who capture our imaginations through rich characters and mesmerizing language. Could part of that brilliance be due to their 19th-century grammar instruction?!

This class is the first semester of a year-long 19th Century Grammar Instruction Series. This course is inspired by the 19th-century British homeschooling matriarch Charlotte Mason. Mason was a classical educator who believed students should be given a "feast" of ideas and allowed to "feed on the good, the excellent, and the great." She felt dry textbooks full of facts were a disservice to the wonder and life of the young child.

This approach is best for students who have been reading and have been exposed to written English language for at least 2-3 years. It can be used as an introduction to grammar or a change in approach for the many students who struggle to care about grammar. This course allows students to connect to language versus merely consuming grammar. Due to this, students engage with grammar in a new way, seeing it as a tool they can use to communicate their ideas. This class is great for learners who have been identified as gifted. If your child is 9-10 and gifted, please message me so I can open it for your child.

At each meeting time, students will be introduced to new material that builds on the prior lesson. We will do a group review of previously learned material. I will introduce the new concept through open conversation with learners. They will then exercise their newly gained knowledge in the live class with the use of 19th-century illustrations, sharing with each other sentences and writing that apply their understanding. We will end class discussing what they need to do for homework if they have it, and what we will be covering the following lesson.

Lessons are as follows:
1. The Subject
2. The Verb
3. The Noun
4. The Adjective
5. The Predicate

I will admit- I love grammar. I love looking at language as a dance between words and punctuation, all working together with intent to create something beautiful. Too often, grammar is taught by teachers who dislike or have not found an approach that works for them. Therefore, students respond negatively and carry with them similar attitudes.

I'd like the try to change that.
