A fun way to help your kids reading and comprehension is to give them interesting subjects to read about. Students will read 3 fun short stories from topics in science and history. This helps students learn to love reading, all the while they are practicing and building their skills. This 1:1 class will provide your student an opportunity to read aloud in class, allowing the teacher to help them as needed. Students will answer 5 comprehension questions about the story they read. Next, the student will write 1-2 paragraphs about their favorite story from class using the writing prompt. We will use the a google doc, (students will be provided a link to) to have the student type up their answer to the writing prompt question. The teacher helps give guidance on their writing, including grammar, punctuation, spelling. These would be considered short essay type writing assignments. (NOTE: typing is preferred as I can offer more feedback in students writing and better able to see their writing, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and so on in typed essays than in written essays.) This class is meant to be 1:1 to provide the help that students need in both reading and writing. NOTE: This class is set as 45 minutes, but not all student need the whole time to complete the three stories and writing assignment. But I have this set as 45 minutes for those student who do need this much time to not feel rushed in completing the class assignments. This makes it manageable for all students. There are 15 weeks of stories at this level, and will repeat every 15 weeks. Students will be provided a copy of the story and questions in the classroom weekly. Week 1: What is America’s oldest state capital? Could another ice age happen? Who is Nelson Mandela? Week 2: Can dolphins really talk? What disaster can fall out of the sky? Week 3: How do spinning ice skaters keep from getting dizzy? Where did potato chips come from? Week 4: What place on Earth gets the most rain? Who was Georgia O’Keeffe? How can bacteria clean up our own messes? Week 5: When was the Internet invented? How was the Grand Canyon formed? What vehicle helped win a war? Week 6: How are fireworks made? Week 7: What is it like to be inside an erupting volcano? What useful invention was almost too late? Week 8: How can you make your own paper? What is the truth about wolves? Week 9: Who was the “underground man”? How can a plant invade a country? What is an urban legend? Week 10: Are termites helpful or harmful? What did Josephine Cochrane invent? When can elephants be backyard pets? Week 11: What is Lascaux Cave? How can 1,000 pets fit into a city apartment? What was discovered in the middle of New York city? Week 12: How can you have fun and save the environment, too? Where did the guitar come from? What can be learned from garbage? Week 13: Can a butterfly cause a tornado? What was Pompeii? Week 14: What is the most dangerous animal on Earth? How can you save a choking person’s life? Week 15: Who was Bertha von Suttner? Are you a “lefty” or a “righty”? What was the Donner party?

I am a veteran homeschool mom of 20+ years. I have a Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning with Technology. In my years of experience I have taught kids reading through personalized help mostly on a 1 on 1 basis customized to what best fits their learning style. I believe not all kids fit in one mold and different approaches need to be made to help each student move forward and succeed in their education.
