None required, though reading (or being read to) is always excellent! Home practice sheets are available (and highly encouraged)! Practice throughout the week helps students remember what we work on in our classes together.Evaluación
Students will be assessed in our very first session to accurately place them in the UFLI curriculum. They will then be assessed through progress monitoring at key points in the curriculum as well as informally assessed throughout the lessons. I take note of specific struggles and include focused practice for those needs.Experiencia de clase

Each class is customized for your student and will include phonics, fluency, comprehension and spelling. I am fun and patient, and I love to give specific praise and encouragement to students while they work with me! Every student's first class begins with an assessment so that I am able to select the level best suited for their strengths and challenges. The regular class begins with a short check-in to build rapport, and then we tackle the specific skills for the day's lesson. Each lesson is tailored to each student's pace. Each new lesson concept usually takes 2 class periods to complete. Each lesson includes varied combinations of the following: - Ice-Breaker question (ex. “Would you rather…?”) - Phonemic Awareness - Quick warm-up to review previously taught concepts - Visual Drill - Reinforces letter recognition and letter-sound correspondence to increase automaticity - Auditory Drill - Reviews sounds and the letters they represent - Blending Work - Increases student's ability to blend sounds to form words - New Concept - Systematic and explicit instruction of the new skill or concept - Word Work - Practice reading and spelling regular words with the new concept - Irregular Words - High frequency words (or sight words/"heart" words) taught with a focus on the regular parts and NOT just memorized. - Connected Text - Focuses on reading and spelling both regular and irregular words in sentences followed by a decodable passage Classes are high-energy and high-focus for 30 minutes, aiming to maximize a student's learning. Classes will include slides and discussion in an "I do, we do, you do" format. This allows me to directly teach them our current skills, model as we practice together, and then allow the student practice on their own (with support as needed) to gain confidence and increase their abilities in reading. No prior knowledge is needed except being able to use technology for the classes. If a student has no pre-reading skills yet, we will begin with learning the alphabet!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will increase their decoding skills, increase reading with fluency and increase comprehension of the texts they read. Exact learning goals will depend on each individual's student's struggles and strengths.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Licenciatura en Ciencia desde The University of North Carolina at Charlotte
I have taught for over a decade, both through homeschooling my children and co-ops as well as thousands of online classes in English and reading. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
I have worked with children since I was a teenager and enjoy building rapport with each and every student.
When they are excited about being in class and learning together, our rate of success is increased! Helping students become more fluent, confident readers is a passion of mine. I believe that being able to read well lets us access the world in ways we cannot otherwise! We can learn about anything that we want when we can read! I am currently in training to become a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist, aiming to complete my training in the fall of 2024. . Students diagnosed with dyslexia (or suspected of having dyslexia) often need a slower paced class with much repetition to help them really learn and retain concepts. I am very patient and encouraging, understanding that learning to read can be extra challenging for some.
