Experiencia de clase

1 on 1 guitar lessons are going to be heavily student-driven, so it's a little tricky to describe what exactly we'll work on together. In general, though, I tend to focus on learning music in a creative and intuitive way - students will be encouraged from very early on to experiment with improvisation and songwriting, so that they won't just be learning how to play specific songs but rather how to play with the different sounds they can get from the instrument. Here are a few of the things we'll tend to focus on to hone the student's guitar practice:

-Building a repertoire of student-selected songs.
-Honing techniques from brief, effective exercises.
-Learning music theory in a gradual, easy-to-digest way.
-Analyzing how the songs that speak to them are put together.
-Improvising based on the genre and style that interests them.
-Putting it all together through songwriting and experimentation.

The exact balance of what we’re going to do is 100% up to the student’s interests and goals, but each of the above elements will contribute to the student becoming a confident, well-balanced musician with a huge arsenal of musical tools and tricks at their disposal to express themselves however they want.

Orientación para padres
I pull my music selections most often from popular music (often just whatever music the student has expressed interest in). For younger students by default I avoid anything explicit, but for teens my default is to allow them to decide whatever music they'd like to play. If there is any particular content you'd like me to avoid with a student, please communicate that to me.
Lista de útiles escolares
1. A guitar with all 6 strings (acoustic or electric will do).
2. A guitar tuner (I recommend a Snark clip on tuner, available from $15 to $20 USD) or an app that will work as one (I recommend GuitarTuna - it's free)
3. A few guitar picks.
4. A way to view the music and materials I send.
5. A good seat without arm rests, ideally one in which the learner can sit upright with their feet touching the ground.

Optional, but nice:
1. A good, sturdy music stand. One with a solid back is best. These often cost $25 USD or more.
2. Print-outs of the music and materials I will send, as well as a folder or binder to keep them in.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I'm a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with over 10 years of experience offering private guitar, bass and ukulele lessons. I believe that music is primarily and most importantly meant to be an enjoyable means of creative self expression and entertainment, and as such my teaching puts a strong emphasis on ensuring that learning an instrument is a fun and engaging experience.

I strive to create classes that build a strong musical foundation for my students without sacrificing the playful and fun nature of making music and exploring sound. As such, my classes will heavily be based on the learning of popular and well-known music from a variety of genres and time periods, even using songs from movies, TV and video games to help make practice feel more like play than work. We'll learn core skills like chords, scales, arpeggios and rhythm through songs, solos and riffs, not abstract exercises.

For private lessons, my curriculum is heavily personalized to fit the needs and preferences of each student, choosing whenever possible to pull from songs and artists the student is already familiar with to teach new techniques and concepts. I've taught an extremely wide range of styles and genres, but my personal musical background is primarily in Punk, Indie, Ska, Rock, Folk, and Flamenco. Students can expect to develop a repertoire of their favorite songs, learn basic upkeep and maintenance of their instrument, and build an understanding of and confidence in their ability to express themselves through their own improvisation and songwriting.
