Winter Seed Sowing: A Mini-Mester Nature and Science Class
Stephanie Murray BSN, MSSW
Plant a mini greenhouse now and be ready for your best spring garden ever!
In this six-week mini-mester class, we will plan, prepare, and plant a mini greenhouse. Your garden enthusiast will learn all they need to know to have seedlings ready for the outdoors by early spring. We will take a step-by-step approach to seed sowing no matter what part of the country you live in. Planning and preparing is more fun when we do it together. Developing friendships and having positive interactions around a common interest is my primary goal. We will research the best seeds to...
Students will plant one or more mini greenhouses to begin their spring garden. Whether your learner has a large area to plant or a small balcony, the mini greenhouse method is applicable. Each learner will learn how to use a Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the stages of germination, how a greenhouse works, the basics of photosynthesis, and the simple joy of planting and watching something grow. Whether your learner is using this class as an extension of their science curriculum, just looking for a fun hobby, or wanting to make new friends, this class is a good fit. There will be an option at the end of the 6 weeks to extend the topic based on learners needs. I look forward to meeting your learner and planting with them. Until then...happy learning!
Hello! My name is Stephanie and I have over 30 years experience working with children and adolescents. I am a mom, garden enthusiast, online ESL teacher, and tutor. I have been teaching on Outschool since May and loving it. Creating a fun and interactive environment for learning is my goal. Small groups provide the best place for learners to experiment, ask questions, share knowledge, and be an expert in their hobby. I have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Social Work. I have been experimenting with different types of gardening for over 30 years. From water gardening to cut flowers, I have loved it all. I enjoy the science and the art of growing vegetables, flowers, succulents, and anything that I can share with friends and neighbors. Come join me in my classroom and let's learn together!
For Week 1: - A notebook, pencil, and 2021 calendar or printed calendar pages - We will review the next weeks supplies each week before the end of the class. Some of the supplies needed for the semester will include: -1 gallon milk jug or clear plastic tub -Potting soil /planting mix -Scissors, Sharpie, 2 inch clear packing tape or duck tape -Flower, herb, or vegetable seeds (cold tolerant)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents will help their learner gather resources and make the cuts in their plastic containers (safety first!) I will also show learners how to find their Plant Hardiness Zones. Since this will require the use of a zip code or identifying the region of each learner, I will encourage learners to do this with a parent or guardian. This will provide privacy for learners as well as establish a reference for planting regardless of where you live.
We will refer to The Plant Hardiness Zone Map throughout the class. I will demonstrate in class how to find the information and encourage them to do this one of their parents.
