Beginning Life Science (Botany) : How Seeds Sprout

In this one time class, learners will learn how seeds sprout. They will create a picture diagram of a seed sprouting as well as beginning a seed germination bag of black beans to show how the bean turns into a sprout and then a bean plant.

Grading
Learners will be graded on their black bean germination activity. They will also be graded on their picture diagram of a seed sprouting.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
5 minutes: This time will be spent talking about seeds sprouting. Learners will use their knowledge by discussing what they already know about how seeds sprout.

15 minutes: The teacher will read How Does a Seed Sprout? by Eric Carle. I will pause throughout the book to ask questions, point out important pictures, discuss vocabulary, and let learners ask questions about the book. 

10 minutes: The learners will draw a picture diagram of how a seed sprouts into a tree.
We will discuss how this growing process is slightly different in other plants.

5 minutes: I will wrap up the lesson by reviewing the steps of how seeds sprout with the learners. They may choose to share and show their picture diagrams. 

5 minutes: The teacher will demonstrate how to germinate black beans by using a wet paper towel, a small plastic Ziplock type baggie and several black beans. Learners will also do this activity.  

5 minutes: I will give the learners some follow up activities and book recommendations such as : Dig, Plant, Grow by Felder Rushing.  

*This class will be taught regardless of how many learners sign up for the class.

* The time slot of this class may be adjusted according to the numbers of learns who signed up.

Supply List
Learners will need:

 1 bag of dried black beans ( pre soaked overnight)
 a few wet paper towels
 a Ziplock type plastic baggie or silicone baggie

A few pieces of blank white paper
crayons
colored pencils

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
