What Is the Deafblind Community - Taught by a Deaf Teacher -Middle School
Class experience
You've heard of the Blind community. You've heard of the Deaf community. But what is the DeafBlind community? This is a small community where an individual is part of two distinct communities, Deaf AND Blind. This class provides an in-depth exploration of the DeafBlind community, focusing on the experiences, challenges, and strengths of individuals who are living with both vision and hearing loss. Learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the unique characteristics, communication...
I'm a Deaf Studies major from University that has worked with and has friends that are DeafBlind. I have connections with the Georgia Association of the DeafBlind. On a regular basis, I interact with the Deafblind community as well send my university students and private students to their events as well as conferences to volunteer. My sign is “L” nice. My primary interest in ASL started when I was five years old when I was watching a group of Deaf adults signing before a theatrical play. I started learning ASL at the age of five through a Christian school as well as teaching myself. During my time in college, I obtained a degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Learning ASL would benefit me due to the fact that when I became a young adult, I lost my hearing due to Meniere’s disease. I’m considered a Late Deaf in the Deaf community because I lost my hearing when I became a young adult. For the past eleven years, I have been organizing Deaf social events in the metro Atlanta area. In addition, I’m known as the Deaf nerd/cosplayer in the cosplay community in Atlanta. I’m part of different charity cosplay groups that volunteer to attend hospital visits, children’s events, parades, hospice, and etc. I’m the only Deaf individual in these groups as well as the first Deaf individual to join. I’m a proud mother of an eleven-year autistic son, Solomon, who is fluent in ASL and is very much part of the Deaf community just like his mother. He’s considered a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult). In our household, we use ASL and English. We have a three-year-old Autistic Service Dog, Sammie, that knows English and ASL also!
