Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Day 1- In this lesson we will read and watch a few video clips about Joss Kendrick, the first American Girl doll with a hearing impairment. We will discuss how she deals with her hearing loss. She is an avid surfer who happens to have a hearing impairment. In the story she uses some ASL, but mostly uses hearing aides and reads lips to help her hear to better hear and commicate. This lesson is about inclusion and how a hearing impairment impacts one's life. In the story, Joss has congenital hearing loss. She was born deaf (no hearing) in her left ear, but can hear some with her right ear thanks to a hearing aid. “Partially deaf” therefore is the best description for her hearing loss.
Hearing loss is very different for each individual, but the goal of the lesson is to provide a realistic scenario that could resonate with a wide range of girls with different hearing loss profiles. We will have a share time so that each learner can share their doll and accessories with us. Learners may share any doll they like. It does not have to be an AG doll.

Day 2- In this lesson we will read and watch a few video clips about Julie the first American Girl doll from the 70s. We will discuss what it was like in the 70s and how things are changing in the world. We will look at things children did back then, such as what they did for fun. After this, learners will share their dolls and accessories. This will be a blast from the past. Learners can share any doll they would like. It does not even have to be an AG doll.

We will discuss things children did back then, such as arcade games. After this, learners will share their dolls and accessories. This will be a blast from the past. Learners can share any doll they would like. It does not even have to be an AG doll.
