US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this one-time class students will learn about volcanos while solving a math word problem. The focus will be on word problems with number 1-20. The math problem will include subtraction with numbers 1-20. ⭐️Learners will have one mission: to solve the math word problem ⭐️To unlock the word problem students will need to learn new facts about volcanos. ⭐️As they learn about volcanos they will earn puzzle pieces. ⭐️These puzzle pieces will be used to unlock a math problem that they'll solve to earn a trophy. I believe that it's important to connect with each learner in class. Therefore, I keep my class sizes small so that every child can participate and share. Learners will be encouraged to get up and move during our class. ⭐️⭐️This is a preview to my ongoing class for solving math problems. ⭐️⭐️ I use different facts about volcanos and different word problems in my ongoing class so that students don't see an overlap in content. This will be a student centered class where learners are encouraged to problem solve and fix errors amongst each other. Can 6, 7, and 8 year old's do this? Yes, I have been teaching my students math using word problems for the past 7 years. I've found that students are more engaged in learning math this way because they are the ones learning and teaching each other new concepts. When solving the word problem learners will be given a math problem which the teacher will read out loud. Then learners are given 5-10 minutes (depending on the needs of each individual class) to solve this problem. They are encouraged to use tangible ways of coming up with a solution but they are not required to use 1 specific way of answering. If they figure out their answer before the rest of the class they will be encouraged to test their solution by finding a solution to the problem in a different way. During this time the teacher will not correct errors. This is a student centered class. Therefore, errors will be discussed as a class. Once students find solutions to the problem they will be encouraged to write their answer in sentence form. This helps students prepare to share their answers out loud. Then students will share their answers out loud. This encourages communication skills in young learners. The teacher will write each answer on the board. If there are different answers then as a class we try to figure out which answer is correct. Once we have the correct answer the teacher will introduce/review different ways of interacting with the numbers within our problem. At the end of class we will reflect on our learning. Learners do not need the ability to read the problem to be able to solve it. Some students struggle with reading while flourishing in math. Giving these students math word problems usually gives them a sense of confidence in the midst of learning reading and comprehension skills. It's a great way to reinforce both reading and math skills. ⏰If this time doesn't work for you please request a different time⏰
