UME Academy's Video Game Designers Club is a fun, social gathering where kids design video game levels, inspire each other with their creativity and play their creations together. Each week explores a new game style and refines their design thinking skills. If your kids love the creative aspects of Roblox and Minecraft, this club is where they'll want to hang out and push their creative skills outside the blocks ;) Participants will learn how to design 2D levels in Unity, the most popular game design platform on the planet. They'll acquire skills in digital literacy, becoming experts at manipulating objects in content creation software and using hotkeys to accelerate their workflow. No prior experience required, just a computer with a keyboard (no iPads) and a passion for gaming. Each week will bring new and modified game challenges and concepts to work with, beginning with: Week 1 - "Marsh"mallow platformer: learn how to balance risks and rewards, goals and obstacles to build your own fun and exciting platformer game! Week 2 - "Snowball": design your base in this winter themed playground contest! Week 3 - "Space Survival": as an astronaut, face off against robots and spaceships as you try to escape an alien planet! Week 4 - "Undersea Adventure": pilot your submarine and look for treasure while avoiding sharks and other prickly undersea creatures! Week 5 - "Club Mystery":build your own haunted house and survive enemies like bats, spiders and skeletons which searching for treasure! Week 6 - "Club Jungle":create a jungle adventure level and collect bananas and cherries - but watch out for the hunter and the piranhas!
Learning Goals
Each week, students will refine their digital literacy and design thinking skills as a game designer. Game designers don't just make game for themselves, they try to imagine what other players think and feel and incorporate those ideas into their designs. They'll also learn how to give and receive constructive feedback as part of the process to making great games.
