Using Jiu-Jitsu Matches as a Jumping off Point for Writing!
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate Level
Using matches from IBJJF and ADCC, each zoom session I will stream matches from FloGrappling site to watch, analyze and discuss. Focus will be on game play, technique, and applying these to their own jiu-jitsu game. Using this sport students already enjoy, we will craft original paragraphs in varying formats each week (persuasive, analysis, descriptive, narrative) and work to elevate current writing with use of clauses in sentences, transitions, sensory details, and clear and direct...
This class is taught in English.
Students will be able to watch matches and then discuss and analyze what they saw and apply it to a written paragraph structure.
I am a blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu and compete multiple times per year. I am also on staff for AZBJJL and work behind the scenes at jiu-jitsu competitions. I truly enjoy studying matches to evolve my own game, and writing about them allows me to be passionate and detailed in a specific manner. I have been teaching English for 22 years and love finding ways to connect writing to what students already enjoy.
This class is for students who can already write complete sentences, but need to work on amping up their writing with varied sentence fluency, specific and detailed word choice, and writing with a specific purpose.
Students should have at least a basic understanding of the sport of Jiu-Jitsu in order to be able to analyze and discuss matches both orally and in writing.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport. Matches will be shown from IBJJF and ADCC competitions on FloGrappling. (Not required of students to have this site.)
Teacher will use FloGrappling. Students ideally should use Google Docs so they can share documents with teacher/class for feedback and editing purposes.
