US Grade 5 - 8
This class is taught in English.
This accredited theme covers the following learning standards:
-Research: Evaluating and Synthesizing
-Informational Writing: Purpose, Technique, and Process
-Technology: Digital Media Literacy
-STEM: Utilizing and Constructing Models
Homework Offered
Each learner will be provided with an Unsolved Mysteries project learning journal from Prisma's accredited program. The journal slide deck is broken into tasks with suggested due dates to help learners manage their work. There will also be opportunities to share progress updates in workshops, get live feedback toward the end of the course, and present their projects during Expo Day. Although the asynchronous "homework," is not strictly required, for learners to get the most out of the live workshops, they are encouraged to complete the slide decks.
4+ hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
A certificate of completion outlining accredited badges earned will be awarded to learners who complete all parts of the course.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Theme content focuses on age-appropriate mysteries that don't involve death or violence. Some of the real-world mystery options learners can choose from may have scary moments. For example, the Gardner Museum Heist involves an armed robbery, and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart involves theories about a plane crash. However, learners can choose which real-world mystery to investigate, and some options (such as "Who invented Bitcoin?" and "What is Havana Syndrome?") have no such content.
There are no required books for the theme, but a suggested mystery book list at middle-grade reading levels will be provided upon enrollment. Within the project journals, kid-friendly article and video sources will be provided to investigate the real-world topics.
