US Grade 2
Does your learner like to solve fun mysteries? Well, let them put on their detective hat and get to work using their 2nd grade math skills! Mini Math Mysteries are a fun 'game-like' activity to practice 2nd grade math skills. They follow a simple elimination structure where learners will be using the answers to the math questions to eliminate possibilities. This is an ongoing class, so you are free to join in and leave as you please. At the beginning of each class, learners will hear a short story to preface the mystery they will be solving for the day. Then, it is time for our math detectives to get to work! Learners will answer a variety of questions based on 2nd grade content to solve the mystery. They will fist solve the math questions, and then they will look for their answers in the boxes and eliminate the boxes with a matching answer on our shared screen. After answering all questions, only one image will remain (that image will contain a number that didn't match any of the answers to the questions) and that box is the solution to our mystery! Some of the math concepts we will be working on include: -Addition with Regrouping -Missing Addends -Adding Multiples of Ten -Missing Subtrahends -Word Problems (Addition and Subtraction) -Addition within 20 (Questions and Word Problems) -Subtraction within 20 (Questions and Word Problems) -Comparing Numbers (up to 100) – Circle the Greatest/Least -Place Value of the Underlined Digit (Tens & Ones Only) -Mentally Add Ten (numbers up to 100) -Mentally Subtract Ten (numbers up to 100) -Read and Write Time (O’Clock and Half-Past Only) -Adding double-digit numbers – No regrouping (Questions and Word Problems) -Subtracting double-digit numbers – No regrouping (Questions and Word Problems) -Place Value Models - Base Ten Blocks (Hundreds, Tens, and Ones) -Missing Addends up to 30 -Missing Numbers in Skip-Counting Sequences (2s, 5s, and 10s) -Mix of Addition & Subtraction (within 100, no regrouping) -Addition within 100 with regrouping (Questions and Word Problems) -Subtraction within 100 with regrouping (Questions and Word Problems) -Adding three addends -10/100 More or Less (Missing Numbers) -Read & Interpret Picture Graphs -Read & Interpret A Bar Graph -Comparing Numbers up to 1,000 -Missing Addends to 20 (Questions and Word Problems) -Numbers written in words up to 1,000 (write the numeral) -Place Value Hundreds, Tens & Ones (Expanded Form, Models) -Skip Counting by 5s and 10s -Read and Write Time (O'clock & Half-Past only) Week of August 5: Case of the Beach Burger Blunder (Subtraction with Regrouping) Week of August 12: Case of the Backpack Bandit (Adding Multiples of 10) Week of August 19: Case of the Cafeteria Chaos (Word Problems) Week of August 26: Case of the Crayon Criminal (Introduction to Addition with Regrouping) Week of September 2: Case of the Kidnapped Principal (Missing Subtrahends) Week of September 9: Case of the Book Burglar (Missing Addends) Week of September 16: Case of the Tricky Teacher (Addition and Subtraction Word Problems) Week of September 23: Case of the School Hallway Hoax (Skip Counting) Week of September 30: Case of the Falling Apples (Telling Time) Week of October 7: Case of the Haunted House (Repeated Addition/Beginning Multiplication) Week of October 14: Case of the Smelly Spells (10 or 100 More/Less) Week of October 21: Case of the Monster Mix Up (Place Value- Base Ten Blocks) Week of October 28: Case of the Halloween Heist (Place Value- Expanded Form) Week of November 4: Case of the Kidnapped Turkey (Addition and Subtraction) Week of November 11: Case of the Gobbler's Curse (Comparing Numbers) Week of November 18: Case of the Thanksgiving Thief (Adding 10 to Numbers) Week of November 25: Case of the Secret Spice (Adding Single-Digit to Double-Digit Numbers) Week of December 2: Case of the Selfish Elf (Place Value- Hundreds, Tens, and Ones) Week of December 9: Case of the Christmas Chaos (Addition and Subtraction/Some Word Problems) Week of December 16: Case of the Zombie Elves (Addition and Subtraction with NO Regrouping) Week of December 23: NO CLASS!!! I taught at a private preschool for 1 year and the rest of my teaching years have been in a public school setting or online. In May of 2019, I began a new endeavor, teaching ESL online to students in China. I absolutely love teaching online and meeting students all the way across the world! As a teacher, I believe it is my responsibility to make learning fun, help and encourage students to be successful in learning, and fostering a love for learning at an early age. In my classroom, you will see plenty of activities for varying learning styles, lots of movement and interactive activities, and learning through play.
I am passionate about teaching young children, and I look forward to meeting your learner(s) and helping them develop their young minds! I can't wait to meet you in the classroom!
