Class Experience

There are a total of 8 units in my full-year Spanish Beginner program. Unit 1 is greetings, alphabet, and numbers 1-10. All my units from 1 to 8 in this beginner course are focused on Speaking not writing or grammar. We learn grammar as a child learns it, naturally by hearing it and speaking it. No outside assignments or homework are required for this course but the more you review our recordings on your own time the better the retention of the materials so I advise you to review whenever you can before each class meeting. I speed up or slow down based on your individual needs. Beginners-no previous Spanish is necessary but if it is too easy I add challenges and speed up for you. An example of my classroom each time we meet for 25 minutes is: Greetings with my student in English at first then in Spanish. I then introduce a song we will sing each time we meet for the entire 8-week duration which has our target sentences to a familiar tune they may know like: the Song Hickory Dickory Dock but with the lyrics changed into our target sentences for easy and fun retention. After our song, we dive into our PowerPoint slides that have colorful images with our target sentences for the day and we end the class with the same goodbye song. Throughout the class I let them know they are getting closer to the end of the class and keep them motivated to stay focused by rewarding my students with 4 hearts or stars. As we get to the 5th star I announce they did it! They got through the lesson and did fantastically! They get high fives from me and my little husky toy that joins me for class, I call her Canela. She sometimes appears on the slides too. Each lesson after that is very similar and we focus on repetition, speaking in complete correct sentences each time we meet. After 8 weeks it should be easy for them to remember our target sentences and we will end out 8 units with a formal assessment. A quiz I will have them take in class with me and I will give them their grade at the end and let you know how they did and what still troubles them. They should be ready for Unit 2 after this with me to keep building upon their skills.

Learning Goals

The goal is to have your child love language and I hope to be the teacher to make Spanish fun and easy for them so that they want to continue more. This first Unit is the start of the first-year program which is all 8 units and I make it so they want to continue. We will work on speaking in complete sentences from day 1 and I correct pronunciation, being a native speaker, and they should be comfortable asking for someone's name, answering what their name is, asking and answering about age. Asking how someone is, saying hello and goodbye. We also learn out numbers 1-10 and the alphabet letter names and sounds. They should be ready to build upon these skills in my unit 2.
