Class Experience

Week 1 - What is Sustainability, Seed Starting and Heirloom Vegetables
Week 2 - Leaves, Soil Building, Compost and Organic Fertilization
Week 3 - Roots, Stems, Companion Planting and Crop Rotation
Week 4 - Flowers, Pollination, Pollinator Habitats and Pests in the Garden 
Week 5 - Soil Building, Crop Rotation, Perennial Plantings and Hugelkultur
Week 6 - Harvesting, Seed Saving and Record Keeping
Farmer Katie is a certified teacher and principal that teaches K-12 students at the Growing Minds Educational Farm near Charleston, SC. This class allows students who do not live in coastal South Carolina to learn about growing their own food sustainably where ever they may live. During her time in the public school classroom, she won Rookie Teacher of the year for Charleston County School District which employs over 6000 employees and 50,000 students. 
Each week will have optional extension activities such as planting seeds that can be done to enhance the learning from each week's lesson.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class. is a free platform which does require user to create an account. Flipgrid is a social learning platform that allows educators to ask a question through a video recording then the students can respond.  Students can respond vis video or written response. This allows us to have the feeling of a classroom community while participating on a virtual flexible schedule set up to accommodate learners on different schedules and in different time zones.  
There are no required supplies but If your child is interested in conducting their own experiments at home, pick up a seed starting kit and some seeds from your local garden center.
