Class Experience

As a veteran middle school teacher and high school tutor with over 20 years of experience. I have seen firsthand the anxiety that comes with a new assignment or project which often causes procrastination and a "block" for getting started. After helping many students with this skill, I am excited to bring it to the Outschool platform! Project and assignment unpacking is a valuable lifelong skill that will help learners complete multi-step tasks with confidence.

This class will show your learner exactly how to unpack any assignment using teacher scoring guides, rubrics, and directions to be sure that all parts are mapped out immediately so the research can begin in a way that makes sense. Real student assignment examples will be given and learners will get the opportunity to unpack the assignment first with me, and then get an opportunity to unpack another assignment that I have OR use one of their own. Several examples and opportunities for practice will be given.

We will work with examples of small and larger assignments and projects by teaching this step by step unpacking process that I have used for years with my students.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Laura Smith and I am passionate about learning! I have over 20 years as a classroom teacher and have been tutoring middle and high school students for over 4 years. I offer a variety of classes to help with study skills, homework, social skills, and even a class on bike safety!

Professional Background:
I have over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience ranging from elementary to high school. I earned my BSEd degree at the University of Missouri, Columbia. I taught with Columbia Public Schools and Liberty Public Schools since 1992. I currently am tutoring in my home in the evenings and during the day on Outschool.

I will provide a safe learning space where your student will be exposed to skills that will help them become a lifelong learner. I believe that all children learn at different speeds when their brain is ready and receptive to new information. Learning HOW to learn is fundamental to success. It is my goal that students leave a session with me feeling successful and confident!

Most of my classes are related to study skills and how to be the best student you can be. I also have a bike safety class and an ongoing choose your own book club!

Fun fact: My husband and I lived in England for a year in 2004. We enrolled our children in school there where I gained first-hand experience about schooling in another culture. We were able to travel throughout most of Europe while there which provided our family with valuable memories. I currently lead international group tours and travel around the United States in our campervan, Toaster.

I am always happy to answer your questions!
Hope to see you in the classroom!
