In this hands-on class, students will explore the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, then be challenged to build their own ABC tree!
Class experience
We will read, explore, and discuss Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Students will then be tasked with solving a problem: How can we build a tree to hold the most letters? We will learn and follow the Engineer Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve) to solve the problem. We will discuss how we can make our own tree to hold up the letters, choose materials to use, draw a plan, create the tree and test it out, and make improvements. Students will recognize different letters in the alphabet. Students will learn about and follow the Engineer Design Process to solve a problem. Students will use creativity and ingenuity to accomplish a task. Students will persevere when faced with a challenge.
As a children’s author and illustrator, as well as elementary school teacher, I enjoy teaching young learners the process of creative thinking and problem-solving that is meaningful and reflects their own interests.
