Class Experience

There are myriad divergent skills that go into animation—storytelling, directing, editing, audio effects, music, set design, character movement and more and I teach them from a holistic perspective focusing on the interests of the students while helping them stay balanced between technique and storytelling.
Hi! I'm Mr. Brady!

I welcome and can help ALL learners.

My priority is always that every learner learn and have fun, and my classes are setup to remove the obstacles that prevent them from applying technology effectively to teach themselves and create independently. I help kids take action as thinkers, creators and innovators in their own right ON TOP of the mechanics of stop motion animation.

It makes a difference that I have over 15 years of classroom/IT lab experience teaching K-12 students and leading digital learning and STEAM programs in the US and top international schools. I hold a New York State Teaching Certification in Middle School Grades 5-9, and my Masters Degree is in Teaching Students with Disabilities.
Students share their work and thinking through the Outschool platform. This includes pictures of their setups, exports of their animations, and providing feedback for students doing the same.

You can use a ipad/tablet or phone and I've even had some students use a Chromebook with success, but an iPad/tablet can be especially good for learners as they benefit from a larger screen to manipulate and edit smaller elements within their video. APP: You need the Stop Motion Studio Pro app: ONLY the iOS or Android version. No computer versions are supported in the class. STAND/TRIPOD: A phone stand/tripod is a necessity to do stop motion. I have created a slide with many easy, free stands you can make using household items like legos, coffee cups, cardboard, etc.. Have a look and click on the images to go to the how-to video. You only need one, you just need something basic to get started. Link: GREENSCREEN RESOURCE 1: Please have at least one letter sized /A4/A3 sized sheet of green or blue construction paper, green/blue fabric or a commercially available "greenscreen" of some kind to practice making use of the 'greenscreen tool". It is enough to see how it works with a small green paper background and then be able to construct or purchase the appropriate tool for your projects. There is no common size, etc.. to recommend as it depends on the size of the stop motion stage/action. BLU Tack RESOURCE 2: One package of Blu tack adhesive putty or equivalent. Available at most office supply shops or stores that sell school supplies. Also available through Amazon: ------ OPTIONAL RESOURCE: One small spool of utility wire thin enough to bend but still firm enough hold its shape to suspend a lego character, or vehicle. Available at any hardware store or Amazon. OPTIONAL RESOURCE: Headphones with a volume control built into the wire for triggering the camera remotely.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
To get beyond the beginner plateau, nothing is more important than feedback and the FLEX format allows me the personal interactivity and connection with students to give support to each learner literally as much as they like/need because FLEX classes last weeks, not minutes.
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses Stop Motion Studio Pro, Blu Tack and Green/Blue construction paper. (see materials note below)
