Socratic Seminar-Ongoing Class-Dive Deep Into Literature, Discuss and Analyze
Class experience
Learners will be taught to use questioning strategies to help them dive deeply into a variety of types of literature including poetry, articles, short chapters, and well-known texts. During each class, we will read the text aloud several times and learners will have the opportunity to analyze that text through literal and inferential avenues. The teacher will facilitate text analysis through vocabulary exploration, literal understanding of the ideas presented, and inferential and implicit...
-Students will learn to cite specific evidence from the text to support their argument. -Students will learn to understand inferential concepts present in a text. -Students will learn to articulate their thinking based on text evidence and prior knowledge -Students will learn to build and expand on the ideas of others. -Students will learn to respectfully disagree with one another.
I have used Socratic Seminar in my instructional practices for 20 years. I find that it has great value in deepening learners’ understanding of a text and in facilitating learners’ abilities to contribute to a discussion and to evaluate themselves.
It will be helpful for learners to print out the text ahead of time so that they can annotate. Making notes will help them present a stronger argument during class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Outside work is optional. However, students may be able to participate in the discussion more robustly if they have read the text and engaged with the comprehension questions before the live class begins. This is not required, however.
The text for each class will be posted ahead of time. However learners do not need to review it before class unless they choose to.
