Class Experience

In this club we will focus on reading skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary. We will meet once a week. Each week's theme will be learner directed based on student interests and needs however each week will follow the following format.

We will introduce the book of the week and go over reading strategies and vocabulary words. I will share the book via a document camera and we will take turns reading aloud from it.
Based on text some of the reading strategies we will go over include, picture walk, predict, activate background knowledge, locate key terms, visualize, make inferences, summarize using characters, setting, beginning middle and end, recognize cause and effect, compare and contrast, ask questions and identify author's purpose.
After we read the book, we will go over retelling and sequence of events.

Week one theme (07/27): Vocabulary and predictions
Week two theme (08/03): Background knowledge and making connections
Week three theme (08/10): retelling and sequence
Week four theme (08/17): compare and contrast and author's purpose

Book topics:
I would like to give students the freedom to choose a book based on their interests. Book topics they will be presented with will include:

Nonfiction-
National parks
World landmarks
Giants of the Animal world
Brilliant Biomes
Spectacular Sports

Fiction-
Elephant and piggie
Pigeon needs a bath
The bear under the stairs

Learners should be able to sound out words and read short passages.

If your learner needs help learning letter sounds, building beginning reader skills or prefers 1 on 1 classes, I suggest my 1:1 tutoring class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I love to teach foundational skills in math, reading and writing. I am a former second grade teacher and this past year I worked as an instructional aid in kindergarten. I am currently working on my master's in education and finishing up my teaching credential. I believe creating a strong foundation on a love of learning is the best way to set our students up for success. I like to teach using games, physical movement, songs or poems to keep students engaged and excited to learn.
