Show Don't Tell: Using Details in Writing (Writer's Workshop)
Class experience
Sometimes it's hard to hit the word count. Some writers have a "just the facts" approach to getting their ideas on the page. If it's time to go back and add some details and descriptions to make the paper come to life, this is the class that can help! Learners will hear about strategies for making writing come to life and how to "show" instead of "tell" in their writing. Then they will get the chance to put it into practice. If writers have their own papers they're working on, they can...
I LOVE teaching writing! I have been teaching people to write for the past ten years, mostly as a college professor but also in high school programs and after school programs for elementary students. Writing is my passion because I think that it gives people the opportunity to have their voice heard and see their thoughts in a way that allows them to become clearer thinkers with more confidence in their ideas. My teaching philosophy is that everyone can write because everyone has something to say that’s worth hearing. I have worked with high school and college students in classes ranging from remedial to honors, and my philosophy is the same: treat students with respect, value what they have to say, and help them say it well.
A handout with tips for showing instead of telling for future reference will be provided.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I teach writing, philosophy, literature, critical reading, research, and cultural studies. You can learn more about my teaching philosophy and approach to learning at my website Dayla Learning (www.daylalearning.com) or on Facebook...
