A fun and relaxed class that encourages writers to practice their skills. We will use themed show and tell fun as a brainstorm exercise. Students will write across genres - fantasy, personal narratives, poetry, persuasive, procedural, etc. Class will begin with show and tell. Learners will tell us about what they brought to fit the week's theme. I will encourage questions and conversation to help spark ideas for writing and explore the prompt. Then, learners will participate in shared writing about my show and tell. I will model planning a story or expository piece. I will sound out words using phonics-based spelling - reviewing skills along the way! I review basic conventions including spacing, capitalization, and punctuation using an editing checklist. Next, learners will begin the writing process. They will orally plan their story. They will begin working independently and I will check in and support individual writers throughout this time. Last, students will share what they have written with the group. The group will be encouraged to share compliments and suggestions for improvement! This is a course for young writers with advanced writing skills. I'm GT certified, and a gifted kid myself! I believe it's super important that kids have an age appropriate and social place to learn that also challenges them academically! Learners should be confident brainstorming, writing independently, and using basic conventions. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you're unsure if this class is the best fit for your child! I also have a very similar class for learners who are still working on mastering the basics and need support sounding out word by word. 6/27-7/3 : Something from Nature 7/4-7/10 : Someone You Love (picture, drawing, etc.) 7/11-7/17 : Favorite Animal (pet, picture, toy, stuffed friend) 7/18-7/24 : Favorite Toy 7/25-7/31: Something You Made (art project, baked good, lego) 8/1-8/7 : Favorite Book 8/8-8/15 : Someone You Love 8/16-8/23 : Favorite Thing to Watch (bring a related picture, book, drawing) 8/24-8/31 : Favorite Snack 9/11-9/17 : Something From When You Were a Baby 9/18-9/25 : Somewhere You've Visited (a map, souvenir, postcard, drawing, etc.) 9/26-10/2 : Something you Wear (costume, sports uniform, pajamas, favorite shirt) 10/3-10/9 : Something related to your Hobbies 10/10-10/16: Something from a Favorite Place 10/17-10/23: Something Musical 10/24-10/31 : Favorite Book Series 11/1-11/8 : Something You Built / Made 11/9-11/16 : Favorite Food Future weeks to be determined based on student interests :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello there! I’m Ms. Davis. I’m here to talk books and help kids to discover (or celebrate!) a love for reading and writing! My classes are primarily discussion-based, but also include explicit instruction, hands on practice, and fun group activities. I offer writing classes that include plenty of social time to share work and connect with peers. I also teach reading classes and book clubs that fall somewhere between structured tutoring and just hanging with friends, talking books.
I’m a passionate and intentional teacher with significant experience teaching virtually, in private tutoring settings, and in a public school. I’m certified in Texas for early childhood through 6th grade with additional GT and ESL endorsements. I currently tutor students K-5 and have 8 years experience teaching grades PreK-4 in a public school.
One of my great strengths as a teacher is my enthusiasm for books and extensive knowledge of children’s literature. My mom is a librarian - and it shows! I love reading children's literature and have a long list of favorites. Recommending the right book at the right time for a student is one of my favorite parts of being an educator!
Another strength is my commitment to supporting and educating the whole child. I regularly integrate social and emotional learning into my classes and believe that learning to be a kind and confident person is as important as learning to read and write. Teaching is so much more than delivering content, it's supporting learners in becoming the best versions of themselves!
