In this six-week live class, your child will design and code increasingly complex maze-style games. From navigating obstacles to adding scoring systems and power-ups, each session introduces new game mechanics while reinforcing fundamental coding skills. Kids will learn to control movement, implement logic-based challenges, and refine their games for a more polished experience! What Kids Will Learn: Intermediate Coding Concepts • Conditional Statements – Making decisions in code (e.g., "If touching lava, go back to start") • Variables – Keeping score and tracking progress • Cloning – Duplicating sprites to create new challenges • Debugging – Identifying and fixing errors for better gameplay Game Development Techniques • Designing and coding maze layouts • Creating custom obstacles and traps • Adding scoring, timers, and power-ups • Refining games for better playability Key Outcomes: • Strengthen problem-solving and logical thinking skills • Build confidence in coding with more advanced Scratch functions • Create a fully playable, interactive maze game with custom features • Prepare for Level 3 in our progressive Scratch program This Level 2 class is the perfect next step for kids who have mastered Scratch basics and are ready to take on more structured game design challenges! --- Our Progressive Scratch Program From the team behind top Roblox and Minecraft classes, this is Level 2 of our carefully designed Scratch program, built to grow with your child and spark their passion for game-making. We offer a structured yet creative journey for ages 4-12, introducing coding concepts through fun, hands-on projects: • Pre-Level: “Catch the Magic Star!” (Ages 4-7, 4 weeks) – Young learners use Scratch Jr. to create a simple tap-to-catch game, building confidence with basic coding. • Level 1: “Cosmic Rescue – Space Mini-Games!” (Ages 7-12, 4 weeks) – Beginners make a new space-themed game each week, mastering fundamental coding skills in Scratch. • Level 2: “Maze Masters” (Ages 7-12, 6 weeks) – Coders design maze games with scoring, traps, and game mechanics. • Level 3: “Hero’s Journey” (Ages 7-12, 8 weeks) – Learners create multi-level adventures with more complex logic, storytelling, and interactivity. • Scratch Clubs (Ages 4-12, ongoing) – Weekly creative coding sessions where kids design new mini-games in a fun, social environment. Why Scratch? Developed by MIT, Scratch is the world’s leading coding platform for kids, using colorful drag-and-drop blocks to make programming fun and accessible. It teaches essential computational thinking and problem-solving skills in an engaging, game-based format. In “Maze Masters,” kids go beyond basic Scratch skills, learning how to create structured, replayable maze challenges with custom mechanics! What Makes Our Program Stand Out? • Step-by-Step Progression – Kids learn one core game mechanic at a time, ensuring they grasp each concept before adding new complexity. • Real Game Development Experience – We introduce principles used in professional game design, making kids' projects more interactive and engaging. • Hands-On Creativity – Kids customize their mazes with unique themes, colors, and difficulty levels, making their creations truly their own. By the end of this course, your child will have created a complete, interactive maze game and be ready to tackle more advanced Scratch coding challenges!
Learning Goals
Control Characters: Learn to move a player through a maze using keys while avoiding obstacles.
Add Interactions: Implement game mechanics like scoring, traps, and power-ups.
Syllabus
6 Lessons
over 6 WeeksLesson 1:
Maze Basics
• Core Skill: Player Movement – Code a character to move through a simple maze using arrow keys.
• Coding Concept: Collision detection – Use "If touching color" blocks to prevent walking through walls.
• Activity: Design a simple maze backdrop, add a player sprite, and program movement mechanics.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Traps & Obstacles
• Core Skill: Conditional Logic – Add hazards that restart the game when touched.
• Coding Concept: "If-then" statements – Code interactions (e.g., "If touching lava, go back to start").
• Activity: Create a challenging maze with at least two traps that reset the player on contact.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Scoring & Timers
• Core Skill: Variables – Keep track of time and score.
• Coding Concept: Using variables to change game conditions (e.g., "If score = 10, win").
• Activity: Implement a timer or point system to track player progress through the maze.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Power-Ups & Speed Boosts
• Core Skill: Event Handling – Code power-ups that temporarily change movement speed.
• Coding Concept: Modifying variables dynamically (e.g., increase speed for 5 seconds).
• Activity: Add a special item that, when collected, gives the player a short burst of speed.
50 mins online live lesson
Other Details
Parental Guidance
- Parental Support: No adult needed during class, but younger kids (7-8) might want help setting up Zoom or Scratch the first time—after that, they’re good to go!
Tech Needs:
- A desktop/laptop with a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) for Scratch (scratch.mit.edu—no download needed).
- Stable internet for Zoom (link provided by Outschool) and Scratch—camera and mic recommended.
- Setup: Open scratch.mit.edu in a browser tab and Zoom on the same device before class—no account needed to start, but creating a free Scratch account saves projects (optional). Test Zoom and Scratch ahead of time.
- Screen Sharing: Kids can share their Scratch screen via Zoom (“Share Screen” button) if they need help—teacher sees it live!
- Optional: Headphones help focus; a mouse is better than a trackpad for dragging blocks.
- Note: This class uses full Scratch on the web, perfect for ages 7-12—no apps or tablets required!

Hi everyone! I'm Zach, and I'm thrilled to introduce your children to the exciting world of coding through their favorite games and platforms.
What Makes My Classes Special?
I believe in learning through play. That's why I use popular platforms like Minecraft, Roblox, and Unity to make coding fun and engaging for kids. In my classes, your child will gain practical coding skills that can be applied to future academic and career paths. I focus on encouraging creative problem-solving, providing a safe and supportive environment where every child can learn at their own pace.
What Will Your Child Learn?
In my classes, we cover basic coding concepts like variables, loops, and conditionals. But it's not just about the technical stuff! We also explore game design principles, learning what makes games fun and how to create them. Your child will have opportunities to work on team projects, developing collaborative skills and learning to communicate ideas effectively.
I place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, helping your child develop the logical reasoning skills crucial for problem-solving. And of course, they'll gain confidence in using and understanding modern tech tools, boosting their overall technology literacy.
Why Choose My Classes?
As an instructor with a degree in Computer Science specializing in Game Development, I bring both expertise and passion to every class. I tailor the learning experience to match different skill levels and interests, ensuring that each child gets the most out of our time together.
I'm committed to helping your child develop future-ready skills. In today's world, where technology plays an ever-increasing role, the abilities they'll gain in my classes will be invaluable. But perhaps most importantly, I'm here to help unleash your child's creativity. There's nothing quite like watching a child's imagination come to life through their own creations!
Join me in exploring the exciting world of coding through games. Together, we'll empower your child with skills that will spark their curiosity, boost their confidence, and open doors to future opportunities.
