In this 12-week course, students will be introduced to the common code blocks in Scratch. They will learn a variety of computational concepts that will help them develop as logical and creative thinkers. They will create projects such as interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art with Scratch. We will cover the following topics: Week 1 Scratch Tour + Motion: Students will tour the Scratch interface and receive step-by-step instructions that walk them through how to position and make sprites move and how to save their work. Week 2 Dance Celebration: Students learn how to create animated effects with costume sprites. Week 3 Opera Creation: Students will learn how to make sprites communicate with each other using sounds, speech, and thought bubbles. Week 4 Creative Storytelling: Students will learn about backdrops, the stage script editor, and broadcasting commands to create an animated story. Week 5 Music Creations: Students will learn about the music extension and how to add, code, and manipulate notes to play a song or create their own melody. Week 6 Pencil Creations: Students will add the pen tools extension, code a sprite to follow their mouse, and how to draw with a sprite. Week 7 Logical Blocks: Students will learn about sensing commands and how to use it to ask for information from the user. They will also be introduced to conditional statements such as the (If... then) statement. Week 8 Cloning Creations: Students will learn about clones and how to create and control them using the sensing command. Week 9 The Wizard: Students are introduced to variables. They will create a game that includes the previous concepts they have learned such as cloning, sensing, and variables. Week 10 Understanding Lists: Students learn about lists and will create an interactive program that also includes sensing, variables, broadcasting, If...then, and If...else loops. Week 11 Illusions: Students create the illusion of their sprite flying through the air while they try and make it dodge obstacles. Week 12 Video sensing: Students learn how to use the video sensing extension. They program a sprite to react to video motion.
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, the student should have a good grasp of programming concepts and how to use them to design and create projects.
They will...
• Learn programming vocabulary
• Learn about Scratch blocks
• Learn how to use code blocks to create algorithms
• Learn how to use costume and sound blocks
• Learn how to add and use program extensions
• Create interactive stories, animations, music, games and art projects

Supply List
An internet connection and laptop or desktop computer are required to complete the projects. Students will be given a link at the beginning of the first class and we will walk through setting up their free Scratch account. As we walk through the setup, if the student is not familiar with how to navigate around a browser such as Chrome or Internet Explorer, it is suggested that a parent be present to assist if needed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Juanita Dailey. I am super excited to now be an Outschool teacher!!! The types of classes I am looking to teach will revolve around technology such as programming, creating videos, and Zumba fitness classes.
I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Information Management with a concentration in Systems Programming. I also have an MBA with a concentration in Project Management. I have a teaching certificate in ESL and also have various Zumba fitness certifications.
I have over 15 years of teaching experience at the university level and with kids ranging in ages 4 - 12 years old. I also have over 15 years of experience as a Systems Analyst, Software Engineer and Web Designer. I've taught programming classes, ESL and Zumba Fitness.
I love the tech side of things, playing around with creating videos and fitness! My teaching philosophy is that learning should be fun. When learning is fun, this makes it easier for the student to learn and to cultivate a love of learning. I can't wait to be apart of your child's learning experience to help them develop their creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. We're going to have a blast!
Something fun about me is that I love adventure so sometimes you may find me out paragliding or white water rafting for outdoor activities. Indoors, I enjoy playing my arcade games such as Ms. Pacman and putting my ball on our indoor putting green.
