Class Experience

Learn with a native Cantonese speaker! In this initial private session, a one-page evaluation report with recommendations will be provided after class AND the learner will have so much fun that s/he will not feel like this is in an assessment. ***Please MESSAGE ME to open up a class time for you***

This is a perfect class for grown-up helpers to get some strategies when teaching their child Cantonese at home or if you are interested to explore whether my teaching style is a good match prior to registering for ongoing private sessions.

All levels are welcome. Muti-day or ongoing weekly private classes (currently FULL, waiting list for summer 2023 is available).

CLASS STRUCTURE:
Initial assessment will be completed using a fun adventure game. During the game, I may assess learner's proficiency in:
1/ Listening, reading and writing comprehension (depends on learner's goals);
2/ Pronunciation;
3/ Usage of Vocabulary;
4/ Sentence structure; and
5/ Fluency

After class, I will provide a word list of the vocabularies we targeted in class, so learner can review it after class to promote language retention.

I will also provide learner a one-page Key Evaluation Summary report with recommendations 2-3 days after class.

If my teaching style match with learner's learning goals, we can further discuss scheduling, and learning plan afterwards.

Parent is welcome to be stay with learner during class, off camera. A friendly reminder is not to help out (how to say words or answer questions) during class.

Language use: Cantonese, traditional Chinese characters, English and Jyutping

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Becca.

I am a mom, a social worker, and a multi-award-winning author (of ‘The Story of Us’). I am passionate about supporting children in our proud heritage language, Cantonese.

Here, you can find my personal and educational background, as well as an overview of my fun classes.

My ultimate goal is to promote fun learning. I keep my classes very small so that full attention can be given to each learner.

I was born and grew up in Hong Kong. I am a native Cantonese speaker. I was lucky that my recent publication, a Cantonese-English-Jyutping Journal book has won in the Non-Fiction Young Adult category at the Independent Publisher Book (IPPY) Awards and in the Children’s Activity Books category at the National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA).

I am a mother to my beautiful eight-year-old daughter, and we live in Canada. I know how challenging it is to encourage little ones to speak Cantonese, especially if Cantonese is the minority spoken language where you live. It adds an extra layer of complexity if you are not a native speaker or if only one parent speaks Cantonese.

Please do not hesitate to message me if there are any special learning needs. I hope you’ll join me on this fun learning adventure soon!

Thank you,
Becca
