Hi Friends! Welcome to Pokémon Gymnastics. In this weekly club, we practice moves based on our favorite Pokémon characters. That's right, we get to show do a show and tell of our cards or toys and then practice the moves. Everything we do is in the context of a real gymnastics routine. So we will learn how to do summer salts, frog stands, work on our balance and more. One of the things we take pride in is learning how to transition from one move to another and then put them all into a routine. This makes for a great thing to show off to your grownup at home. Speaking of grownups, this is the part parents and guardians need to read. This is a club where your child will need you on the side. Sometimes you may need to hold their legs or help them get the right position from the side of the camera. Don't worry, you don't need to (nor should you) perform in the class. But it is not a place to sit the child and then run errands. So why are balance and gymnastics so important for all children? The answer is coordination and muscle memory. When I was in the Amazon rainforest, I noticed that children could walk at heights on thin branches or hut posts. Later in the Mayan Mountains of Belize, I saw children run softly on rough rocky trains — barefoot. While my muscular friends could not keep up with either group, I miraculously could albeit barely. This was entirely due to my training as a gymnast. I learned balance and agility. Thankfully, Pokémon have both balance and agility that we can copy. This makes for a rousing good time with our three principle components of class: 1. Show and tell of their favorite Pokémon card or toy 2. Practice moves 3. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Parents!
I hope to guide children like yours to a world of exploration. Let's face it. They are already curious and exploring. They just need an expert guide to help them place their ideas and questions in a learning context.
I am a research scientist by profession and training, and I have worked with youth in five countries (Canada, US, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Brazil) from seven different first language households (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Maya Q'eqchi', Maya Mopan, and Yoremnokki).
Topics I focus on include STEM, inventing classes, and social-emotional awareness classes.
My best teachers and professors incorporated lessons of self-discovery, and I offer that same joy of learning to your children. When children share their curiosity with other interested children they gain a great sense of self-esteem. Additionally, show-and-tell of a treasured toy or a creative invention helps build up confidence as well as make for really fun class sessions!
See you in class,
Dr. Drew
Here is a bit more information about me below.
Education and experience:
Ph.D. University of California Riverside - Plant Biology with a concentration in Ethnobotany. This means I explored how families use plants, I held botany workshops in schools, and I did field and laboratory work on the biology of these plants.
M.S. Loma Linda University - Biomedical Sciences with a focus on physiology. This means that I had the fortune to research how arteries develop in the brain, use a proton beam for experiments in the NASA Lab, and learn how to write scientific articles.
B.S. Walla Walla University - Biochemistry with a focus on onion and garlic chemistry. This means that I stunk up my mother's house with the distillation of onion scents to explore the wonderful world of sulfur chemistry.
U.C. Davis Entrepreneurship Academy - Week-long course on entrepreneurship.
École des Entrepreneurs du Québec - Year-long course on entrepreneurship.
