30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class, students will enjoy listening to and interacting with the story "Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons." First, the teacher will introduce herself and all the students. Next, she will give a brief explanation to the students of how they can participate while she is reading. The story will be read aloud and students will be encouraged to read/sing along. After reading, the teacher will ask a few comprehension questions and also talk about subtraction in relation to how Pete's buttons popped off in the story. Then, she will talk about retelling the story and initiate a conversation about the sequence in which the buttons popped off of Pete's shirt (Ex: First, the teal button popped off, second, the blue button... and so on). Last, the teacher will guide the students through the worksheet to practice subtraction in reference to the story.
Learning Goals
Learning that takes place in this class is cross-curricular and includes standards for Math and English. Students will improve their understanding of the sequence in which events in a story happen. They will also use skills that will require color recognition and counting up and back as used with subtraction. Skills such as speaking and listening will be practiced during this class as well. These are all learning goals for Kindergarten based on Common Core Standards. A worksheet will be completed to check for understanding.
