Let's play with Mime and Physics. Mime is a theatre technique that relies on gesture and movement to tell a story. It has been an important communication strategy for thousands of years and it's a great way to study physics. The basic skills of mime are really about using imaginary objects and showing them behaving realistically. Understanding how the universe works is fun and holds the key to understanding storytelling with mime. We use our face and body to communicate mass, weight, force, acceleration, friction, equilibrium and inertia. This perfect blend of science and art allows us to study the basics of mime: expressions, gesture, movement, fixed points and inanimate object work. This class is great for actors and students that like to learn by doing. The mime skills also translate well to students who like to work with green screens and add animation. This is an acting class and we will start with a physical warm-up. Next we will do a physics review because we are creating imaginary object that obey the laws of nature: Newton’s first law tells us that an objects motion won't change unless acted upon by a force. The second law tells us that heavier objects need a larger force to move them. The third law tells us that for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. We will explore mass and inertia with an imaginary beach ball and an imaginary bowling ball. We will explore resistance and change of motion while picking an imaginary flower and holding an imaginary balloon. We will explore force and friction with walls, boxes, and ropes. At the end we will revisit Newton's 3 Laws of motion and do a quick Kahoot! with 10 questions. (https://kahoot.it/)
Learning Goals
Basics of Mime: Face and Body Expressions, Gesture and Movement, Inanimate Object Work
Also addressed:
Newton's First Law of Motion: Inertia and Mass, State of Motion, Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Force, The Meaning of Force, Types of Forces
Newton's Second Law of Motion: Acceleration and Resistance
Newton's Third Law of Motion: Action and Reaction
This is an acting class and although we will explore Newton's Laws of Motion as they apply to imaginary objects in mime, we will not be building free body diagrams or analyzing mathematical data.

We will use a Kahoot! to review the material. It's a game version of Newton's laws of motion to review the material and reinforce the learning.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have always loved theatre and the opportunity it gives us to explore science, history, and nature. This is a movement class for young actors class that blends my passion for science and my passion for teaching acting. I have been a teaching artist for more than 20 years, teaching acting and movement for actors. I have a passion for science and experiential learning and I have also taught science based curriculum as a guest artist in schools and at summer camps.
