Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
A vivid and interesting series of informative photo slides accompanies this talk about how the Native peoples of California made, and still make, some of the most intricate and beautiful baskets in the world. Ideal for California 4th Grade curriculum and Native American Heritage Month (November, USA) lesson plans. I have been a lifelong student and friend of world-famous Pomo/Miwuk weaver, Dr. Julia Parker, who began teaching me basketry in about 1980. I weave baskets as she taught me to do in a completely traditional way, using wildcrafted materials that I gather myself each year, so I have first-hand intimate knowledge of this complex and ancient skill and art form. I have also demonstrated traditional basketmaking for the public at museums and state parks for the past 30 years, and act as liaison between several regional tribes and the local county History Center, of which I am the current President of the Board.
