In my time as a student and a teacher, I have seen endless learners struggle with essays because they've never mastered the simple technique of properly constructing a clear and concise response to a properly interpreted question. This class aims to equip your student with the ability to correctly identify the question, frame an appropriate thesis statement and support/explore that statement while maintaining a direct focus on the thesis itself. Week 1Lesson 1Intro to the Elements of the 5 Part EssayUsing the classic hamburger as our example, students will learn each element of the standard essay format and how they all relate to each other. The elements include Intro Paragraph, the Hook, the Thesis Statement, Topic Sentences, Body Paragraphs and Conclusion. (Or, the Top Bun, the Burger, the Ketchup, the Pickles, the Cheese and the Bottom Bun!)Week 2Lesson 2Exercise: Building a Great 5 Part EssayOnce the Essay Elements are identified and reviewed, the student and instructor will construct an essay together. The focus is on clarity and cohesion. Two of the biggest issues for student essayists are 1) devising a vague thesis statement and 2) losing track of the thesis in the supporting paragraphs. The student will learn how to support an argument and maintain subject focus within the 5 Part Essay paradigm.
Students will learn the standard, Five Part Essay formula and how to use it effectively. This tool, the art of clearly stating a thesis or argument and supporting that idea soundly, is a skill that will empower the learner in many different subjects and projects. Specific goals: 1) Student understands the role and application of the Hook Sentence, Thesis Statement, Supporting Paragraphs and Conclusion. 2) Student understands the imperative of the thesis statement and how to choose a topic that fits the requirements (not too narrow, not too broad) of the assignment. 3) Student understands how to properly outline their essay before writing it. 4) Student generates their own finished 5 Part Essay using the prescribed formula with the assistance of the instructor.

As a two-time class, the format does not allow for much extra time to assist a student with unique learning needs. That said, I am always open to work with any student who requires any accommodation. I'm also very FLEXIBLE on class times.
This is a basic, introductory (or review class) designed to strengthen a student's command of essay writing. Prerequisite is mainly a willingness to learn.
Students will be provided with a class outline and essay schematic.
