Mastering Study Skills Multi Day Class
Middle school can be a challenge to many learners because of the change in routine, multiple teachers, and more expected independence. This 4-week course will cover skills that middle school learners need to master for success.

Study Skills are important for learners to succeed, but nor a skill many students acquire naturally. In this ongoing class students will spend each class acquiring skills like note taking, test preparation, flash cards, creating mnemonic devices, and scheduling their time to improve their study skills. The class is broken into three 4-week segments to make the class affordable for families, and easier for reimbursement from charters and/or co-ops. This class is for students who struggle academically, or who possess minimal study skills. Course Schedule: Week 1 Can You Hear me? Listening Skills. Week 2 Note Taking Week 3 Using Notes for Test Preparation Week 4 Creating and Using Flash Cards Week 5 Creating and Using Mnemonic Devices Week 6 Make Study Tools - Application of Skills Week 7 Effective Time Management and Organization Week 8 Create a Study Schedule - Application of Skills Week 9 The Power of Self-Advocacy (How to ask for help) Week 10 Define Goals, Set SMART Goals Week 11 Develop a Positive Attitude, Change your Mindset Week 12 Re-Assess Skills, Application Practice, How to Implement Lessons are taught using videos, slide shows, lecture, and interaction. Skills are presented to learners, they are able to ask questions, and are encouraged to bring their real life challenges to class for additional support and assistance. Three class periods are spent applying the acquired lessons and skills to students' learning practice with guidance from the teacher. Each week builds upon the lessons of earlier weeks. Students will be provided templates and handout resources for ongoing guidance beyond this 12 week class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their study skills by learning how to take effective notes, use those notes to prepare for tests, implement mnemonic devices for easier recall, create flash cards for vocabulary and hard to remember content, how to manage schedules and time, how to use time to study effectively, and other strategies the teacher may find helpful depending upon the learners in the class.
This class is for students who struggle academically, or who possess minimal study skills.

Paper and a writing instrument will be helpful for students. Handouts may be provided for some class sessions.
