US Grade 6 - 9
Students will openly discuss DC and Marvel comics, shows, and movies. Certain DC characters have influenced Marvel characters and vice versa. Their big screen productions differ greatly from each other, and there are many debates about which on screen presence is better. I will show clips from DC and Marvel movies along with images of certain comic book characters, and find articles to look through to prompt more discussion with the class. Class is learner led as well which may lead students to want to freely discuss comic book content which might contain mature content (comic books contain a lot of mature content that is left out of the MCU).
Learning Goals
Students will learn to think critically to determine the similarities and differences.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Content may be PG or PG-13 as trailers from the Avengers and Justice League are shown. Class is learner led as well which may lead students to want to freely discuss comic book content which might contain mature content.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in English from Syracuse University
Aside from being an English teacher, I am also an avid comic book reader. Comics are a text to be analyzed just as much as novels; I have learned that a "text" involves more than just novels and can include films, video games, books, pictures, and more. Using costumed (or sometimes un-costumed) characters, readers can engage in thorough discussions.
