Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
In this ongoing class, we will meet twice times a week. Each week of lessons will have a different theme such as:
•	My Family
•	Weather
•	Days of The Week
•	Colors
•	Numbers
•	My Face
•	Animals
•	Seasons
•	Fruit
•	Transportations
*We will also learn at least two characters for each session.

The class order will be as follows:
	Begin each class by learning a Mandarin welcoming song
	Go over our new vocabulary of the day
	Use flashcards and other visual aids to help with the student's understanding of the vocabulary
 Play a game to review the vocabulary we have learned
	Drawing and learning the Chinese Characters
	End class with a Mandarin goodbye song

Students will learn basic Chinese vocabulary, greetings, and characters in each session. I will use songs, games, visuals, flashcards, and drawings to help the students engage and interact in the lessons. I will provide worksheets at the end of each week for students to work on with their parents. This will help them maintain all they have learned during the lessons. My goal is to help kids build a great foundation for speaking and writing Chinese.

Hello! I am Doris. I am glad to be your Mandarin teacher. With a rich and diverse background in education and a passion for teaching, I am dedicated to providing a unique and enriching learning experience for your child.

Professional Background
I am a Chinese teacher in an after-school program and an environmental education instructor. My journey has included roles as a pharmacist and a marine conservation advocate in Taiwan. After starting my own family and having children, I began exploring children's education. I have taken courses in child development, children's literature, and psychology at Berkeley City College, as well as advanced training in picture book storytelling.

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy centers around the belief that education should be enjoyable and meaningful. I strive to create a supportive and engaging environment where children feel comfortable exploring new concepts and expressing themselves. By integrating emotional intelligence into our language lessons, I help students not only learn Mandarin but also understand and manage their emotions. As we know there are several benefits from emotional awareness in primary education.

Academic Performance: Students who manage their emotions tend to perform better academically, focus better on tasks, and control their impulses.

Social Skills: Emotional awareness helps students develop empathy and perspective-taking, essential for building strong relationships and rejecting bullying behaviors.

Mental Health: Emotionally literate children cope better with stress and negative emotions, have better mental health, and engage less in self-destructive behaviors.

Something Fun and Personal
On a personal note, I am an avid storyteller and love incorporating puppetry into our sessions, making classes fun and engaging. My extensive volunteer work in healthcare and environmental conservation has equipped me with strong communication skills and a deep understanding of community needs. I especially enjoy interacting with children and look forward to sharing the wonders of nature that have inspired me.
