Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
I've been tutoring and teaching Mandarin Chinese for 20 years.

Some students come to me with materials from what they're learning in school and other students come to me just wanting to start from scratch. I cater to what the student needs.

If you need a set curriculum, I have it. I've taught all levels of Mandarin Chinese.

Examples of topics in my curriculum:
Mandarin Alphabet - Learn the letters, practice with vocabulary for each letter
Colors in Mandarin - learn the colors with images and say the colors of different nouns
Food in Mandarin - names of food and talking about what you like to eat and drink

I incorporate a mix of speaking, reading, listening and writing so students can practice using the language in a variety of ways. This helps increase overall fluency and literacy.

As soon as students learn enough vocabulary and verbs I start teaching sentences and encourage conversation. Depending on the student's age I'll use games and props to engage students.

This class is a subscription that you can cancel at anytime.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Students receive a PDF of the materials I use and a class recording is automatically posted within 24 hours of the lesson so they can watch the lesson again. Re-watching the lesson typically helps with pronunciation and vocabulary or grammar practice.

Example Schedule:
Week 1 - Mandarin alphabet
Week 2 - Review the alphabet, learn numbers 0-10 and days of the week
Week 3 - Mandarin greetings and introductions, day 1
Week 4 - Mandarin greetings and introductions, day 2

Sample Lesson Outline
- Brief introductions "Hello, how are you?"
- We take notes on the first 5 vocabulary words. I recommend using a T-chart so students can quiz themselves later. One side of the T chart is in Mandarin (pinyin), the other side is in English.
- Practice pronunciation of the 5 vocabulary words
- Do three activities to review the 5 vocabulary words.
- Repeat this cycle with 5 other vocabulary words
- Speaking practice to review and say goodbye

Students who enjoy my classes really like structure and the challenge of practicing speaking between notes.

If your student comes to me with specific needs, we don't have to do the structure listed above. I cater my tutoring to the student's needs.

Mandarin and Cantonese Teacher Cherry:
Cherry Man Ching Yeung is from Hong Kong. She has a dual Bachelor's degree in English Language and Education. She has a 120-hour TEFL certification. Teaching is her passion. She has been teaching Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, ESL and other subjects online, in schools, in her center, and at students' homes for 20 years.

She offers children and teenagers group classes and 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. Her favorite and happiest times have been spent with students. They explore language with virtual “trips” to supermarkets, parks, museums and convenience stores.

What students love about her class is that it is fun and engaging, so she uses many props such as toys, photos, flashcards, artwork and puppets. Also, students say she is patient and caring. She loves creating stories, dancing, singing, doing simple science experiments, listening to students and having fun conversations with them. She will take you on the wondrous journey of learning. She is looking forward to seeing you in her class.
