US Grade 1 - 4
In this class, your child will learn what engineers do, the different types of engineering, and the engineering design process. First, I will introduce the topic and have the students watch a short, kid-friendly video. Next, I will ask questions, we will discuss the topic, and I will introduce the engineering design process. After discussion, I will guide the students through a hands on STEM activity in which they will practice being an engineer by using the engineering design process. Students will be given a problem to solve in which they must think about how the shape of an object affects its function. Finally, students will test their designs and discuss results including how they could improve their designs. Parental supervision will be needed during the hands on STEM activity.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what engineering is and what engineers do. Students will develop a simple drawing from which they can make a physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

Supply List
Materials you will need include: a piece of paper, a pencil, a piece of aluminum foil (approximately 12 x 12 inches), a plastic straw cut in to four equal pieces, tape, a large container or sink with water in it, something to add as weight (dry beans, pebbles, small coins, or dry rice).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I enjoy teaching children of all ages. I have 25+ years of teaching experience. I have taught in public school, private school, and homeschooled my two children. Some of the subjects I like to teach include: elementary science, reading, Spanish, ESL, language arts and cooking for those with dairy allergies.
My goal is to make learning fun and interesting for your child. The best part about being a teacher is getting to share in the "aha" moment when a student learns a new concept.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy watching anime with my son, baking, or working on a DIY project.
