Class Experience

Students will get instruction from the teacher as they work through new topics together.
During each session, students will:

1. Receive a lesson on the topic of the day.
2. Practice solving a few problems related to the topic.
3. Explore strategies and techniques for tackling AMC 8 problems.

Class instruction will vary from teacher to teacher but here are some important points to note:

During the lesson, students can use the chat function to share their answers or ask questions, allowing others to keep working independently. Answers are discussed as a group after everyone has had a chance to attempt them so that the class can discuss different approaches and common pitfalls.

This class is ideal for students who have not yet been exposed to AMC 8 topics and want a medium-paced introduction. Students will have time to work on problems, but they may not complete every question if they run out of time. Advanced students seeking faster-paced learning may prefer our 5-6 class.

Sample Questions
Here are some sample problems we’ll tackle in class. This class is a great fit if your student can solve 2 out of 4. You can also take the pre-assessment as noted above.
1. How many different four-digit numbers can be formed by rearranging the four digits in 2004?

2. After Sally takes 20 shots, she has made 55% of her shots. After she takes 5 more shots, she raises her percentage to 56%. How many of the last 5 shots did she make?

3. Handy Aaron helped a neighbor for 1 1/4 hours on Monday, 50 minutes on Tuesday, from 8:20 to 10:45 on Wednesday morning, and a half hour on Friday. He is paid $3 per hour. How much did he earn for the week?

4. Niki usually leaves her cell phone on. If her cell phone is on but she is not using it, the battery will last for 24 hours. If she is using it constantly, the battery will last for only 3 hours. Since the last recharge, her phone has been on for 9 hours, and during that time, she has used it for 60 minutes. If she doesn’t use it anymore but leaves the phone on, how many more hours will the battery last?

Description of the AMC 8 from the creators (https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8)

"The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 allows middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics [and more] from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course."
