Is hydroponics the future of gardening? We will discuss what plants need to grow and discuss how soil contributes to plant growth. Learners will be introduced to hydroponics and learn how it compares to traditional gardening with soil. We will explore the different parts of a simple hydroponics system and reinforce these concepts through a worksheet and an instructor demonstration of setting up a hydroponics unit. At the end, the learner may choose to follow along and construct their own hydroponics kit with our list of suggested materials (many of which can be found at home).

Parental Guidance

Supply List
We will be following this do-it-yourself hydroponics activity: https://www.epicgardening.com/hydroponics-for-kids/ Materials like growing media (e.g., coconut coir pellets, $5-10) and nutrients (e.g., Maxigro, $10-15) may need to be purchased if you wish to complete the activity. For the wick, a paper towel will work just fine. The learner has the option to either follow along and do the activity, do the activity outside of class, or observe the instructor.
