US Grade 5 - 8
In this class, we will build a writing foundation from the first step on! Learners will practice and master writing a strong topic sentence, then learn the ins and outs of formal paragraphs, and end with a full multi paragraph essay. This is a hands-on class where learners will write in every class!
Week 1: Topic Sentences
We will review the purpose of a topic sentence and practice writing them based on results from spinning a Wheel of Topics. We will use the CUPS analogy...Learners will:
learn the structure of a topic sentence
learn the purpose of a topic sentence
create strong topic sentences
learn the structure of a formal paragraph
learn and apply tips to writing a formal paragraph
create formal paragraphs of 4 or more sentences
learn the parts of an essay
learn the process of writing an essay
use a graphic organizer to brainstorm and organize ideas

draft an essay
create a formal, mulit-paragraph essay

I really do not favor one group over the other as they are each special in their own way. However, I have always found it easy to build rapport and sound relationships with teens. While in Ecuador, I built an English Language Academy and often taught the teen and adult classes due to the level of English required. These classes fulfilled me so much because of the conversations, relationships, and learning experiences the student brought to me! Additionally, I have worked in afterschool and summer programs where I gravitated to the older groups of teens. I have completed many 1 on 1 tutoring with teens to help with studying and test preparation.
Homework Offered
Learners may write and turn in work to the teacher for feedback and additional learning if they would like. The essay writing may need to be done between classes with teacher feedback in some cases.Assessments Offered

3 files available upon enrollmentPDF copies printed of outlines needed for class are attached to the welcome message. Please check your email after enrolling (digital copies are also available). Paper and something to write with should be brought to each class.

The learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
