Homework
1 hour per week. Weekly homework will include watching of supplemental worksheets and activities that the teacher will pull from the Founations for Middle School Students website will be utilized for the students to complete. Also there will be several additional tasks that will be assigned by the teacher to be uploaded through the Outschool Classroom once completed.
Assessment
There will be no formal assessment or grade given for this class, unless otherwise requested by the parents.

Class Experience

In this 6 week course, we will follow the curriculum for "Foundations in Personal Finance for Middle School Students" by Dave Ramsey.  This class will be taught in the Zoom classroom, using a number of methods including teacher-led lecture and discussions, as well as using videos from the "Foundations in Personal Finance for Middle School Students" to help enhance student understanding of the topics being taught by the teacher.  Additionally, the teacher will utilize the Outschool Classroom for the posting of out of class discussion topics and directed questions that the students will be responsible for answering, as well as the students will be assigned a number of assignments and tasks to complete that will need to be uploaded to the Outschool classroom at various points throughout the 6 weeks of the class (these activities are listed within the weeks topic below).

The 6 schedule will be as follows:

Week 1:  Saving & Budgeting- An introduction to personal finance, including a look at saving and the 3 reasons to save.  Additionally we will discuss budgeting, what it is and how to build a budget. **Students will complete a brief student budget and submit it to the teacher for review to ensure that they understand the idea of how to budget and the importance of budgeting for things such as spending, savings, and giving.
Week 2:  Credit & Debit- Identifying what credit and debit are, how a credit score affects personal finance and how to avoid debt.  **Students will complete a series of middle school age-appropriate case studies in understanding the pitfalls of succumbing to debt. 
Week 3:  Education, Careers, & Entrepreneurship- We will explore education and career options, including how education can effect earning potential. **Student will send feedback to the teacher through the Outschool classroom and the Outschool messaging in regard what their career goals maybe, if they have begun to think about them.
Week 4:  Investment, Insurance, & Identity Theft- Understanding of investing and rules of investing, insurance and options, and the impact of identity theft of your life.  **Students will complete a brief exercise sent by the teacher to ensure that they understand the concepts behind compounding interest/return.
Week 5:  Global Economics- Build an understanding of the movement of goods and services, as well as the concepts of supply and demand.  **Students will send the teacher a list of items (8-10) that they use everyday, including the country of their origin, this assignment will help the students understand the connectedness of the world in global trade.
Week 6:  Marketing & Consumerism- Introduction to consumer spending and habits, and the role of marketing on consumer spending.


*This class will be taught with the permission of Ramsey Education, as well as the teacher has his certification to teach this course for Ramsey Education.
Learning Goals
Students will learn and understand how to manage money and build wealth in order to set themselves up for successful financial futures. We will do this by examining all of the major topics in personal finance including but not limited to debt, investing, giving, taxes, and budgeting.  Students will seek to apply the knowledge that they gain through a wide variety of activities including setting financial goals, building a budget, and setting plans for investing and retirement.

Parental Guidance
This class is taught from a purely secular point of view, only examining the ideas of personal finance and money management.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have a Master of Business Administration.  I have 3 years of experience teaching business, economics, and finance classes at the Junior/Career college level, in addition to 3 years of classroom experience teaching middle and high school students, and 1 year of experience as an elementary & middle school principal.    Finally, I have 4 four years experience as a National Football League Players Association Certified Contract Advisor, during which time I negotiated contracts, as well as helped to educate my clients as to the proper ways to prepare themselves for financial independence after their sports careers had ended.  It is this same passion to help young people build financial security and freedom that I enables me to guide students.  Additionally, I hold my certificate to teach both the Dave Ramsey "Foundations in Personal Finance for Middle School Students" course, as well as the "Foundations in Personal Finance for High School" course.
