Class Experience

This introductory class will cover the basics of how the human voice functions, from a practical perspective. We will look at the varieties of vocal production and tone, including a brief look at registers, "whisper tone," diction-based distortions, straight tone, shakes, and vibrato.

Additionally, considerable attention will be given to the relevance of breath not only for support of the tone, but also for emotional preparedness and groove. Students will learn to evaluate their own voices and to learn how to work within the framework and abilities of their natural speaking and singing voice in order to express themselves as artists. Emphasis is on healthy and natural singing and on the artistic expression of the human voice.

Interaction will primarily be class-to-instructor with very moderate student-to-student interaction.

I will provide a very brief break approximately midway through the class.

The class is structured primarily as a theoretical class with demonstrations by the instructor and optional class sharing of brief examples by students. Students are welcomed to move a bit and put the teaching into action right away by doing the exercises that I will be demonstrating, as I have them muted for class management. I will provide consistent opportunities and prompts for the students to follow along physically with what I am demonstrating for them.

No prior experience is needed. This class is recommended as a prerequisite for my future voice classes and lessons and workshops.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!

I have been teaching in one capacity or another since 1991, since I was 15. My primary area of expertise is in music, but I've also taught sociology, debate, research, and language from Kindergarten to University levels. I've taught everything from individuals to large classes and seminars. I'm interested in presenting teaching in a new and challenging way that relates to and connects with individual students. My methods are quite unconventional, but they work!

In addition to teaching both in self-employed and formal settings, I have two undergraduate degrees in music performance and considerable work in a contemporary music performance masters program that focused on contemporary and hip-hop studies. My masters degree was in Liberal Studies in which I researched Haitian Graffiti and Street Art and how it is used and understood in the Haitian social context. Now I'm a doctoral student studying worship studies and am focusing on looking at how language and local cultural expression is used in religious practice particularly in the Caribbean.

The most important thing to me as a teacher is that I am presenting material in a way that helps my students think. If you are actively thinking and engaged in my class, success! I rarely use quizzes or exams or drills to teach, since I've found that simple engagement is far more effective in helping students to understand and retain what they are learning.

Currently, I live in the Caribbean. I moved to Haiti in 2016, and since November of 2019, have lived in the Dominican Republic. For fun, I study languages, and am currently working on Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, French, and Hebrew. I'm also a self-confessed nerd and love to read a wide variety of books. And I'm working on making the world's smallest food forest in our tiny back yard!

My work here in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is largely voluntary and based on equipping and educating future leaders to help led these beautiful nations to a bright future! Your participation in one of my classes helps to make my ongoing work here possible! Thank you!
