If you're like me, you wake up each Thanksgiving Day morning preparing to marvel at the artistic, fun and larger-than-life floats in the annual holiday parade in New York City! In this one-time course, students will imagine, brainstorm and create their own 'float' for the Thanksgiving Day parade. The class will briefly discuss the definition of a float, the location and longevity of the parade, and how the look and size of the parade's balloons and floats have grown exponentially in size and detail over the years. Using creative dice prompts, each dot quantity will signify a themed prompt to encourage float brainstorming (i.e. One dot = Is your float a person/ animal or toy? Two dots = What does your float represent or teach? and so on) I will roll my teacher die, share my prompt and students will take some time brainstorming/ bulleting personal float details (***My Float Creation template will be shared/ available on the Classroom page for use with this important brainstorming tip). Once die rolls/ prompts are completed, each student will choose an brainstorming/ bulleting element from each die prompt and organize their ideas into a four to five sentence paragraph, 'advertising' their float for the Thanksgiving parade! Bringing our floats 'to life' through drawing/ sketching will also be encouraged. Each student will be encouraged to share their featured float with our warm classroom community! (Note: along with ***My Float Creation template, a blank writing page with coordinating space to illustrate will also be provided on the Classroom page for print out and use!) *Upon enrolling, students should have some prior knowledge/ visual recognition of the Thanksgiving parade for a smoother connection and transition to the featured float writing! Students should be able to write a sentence independently, but 'correct' spelling and wide vocabulary isn't necessary -- an important element to this class is the growth of creativity and descriptions!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I may be grown up, but my favorite stories are still found in the land of youth literature!
My natural inclination to read anywhere (including upside down in that childhood recliner I mention in my video!) grew to daydreaming about being the characters I so loved reading about and even wondering what they may be like in the real world. Stories and their inhabitants were never flat to me, but rather full of life and complex – just like us, as it turns out!
After receiving my B.A. in English and Psychology, I taught for over a decade, cultivating my joy in literature and writing through teaching the bright, open minds of Pre K – 1st grade students. I became an educator that sought out books to develop rich, cross-curricular lessons and to build oral language and phonics skills. The world of literacy was (and still is!) accessible to all learners: those at grade level, those clamoring for reading challenges and those who built success with the consistency of a one-on-one/ small group learning environment. Each was meaningful, targeted instruction to best suit elementary reading muscles.
Through my literacy-rooted courses, you will find explorations of character development, personal connections, story elements and cause and effect often intertwined with the ‘science’ of writing: parts of speech, grammar, written fluency/ sequencing, oral communication and weaving words into stories that showcase our imaginations and opinions. Our minds and voices are powerful!
PLEASE don't hesitate to reach out with any curiosities you have about my current class offerings and keep an active eye out for upper elementary to middle grade courses.
An engaging nature, dedicated spirit and discussion galore is sure to accompany each class, as I welcome you into my land of literature!
