In this 6-week self-paced (flex) (no live meetings) class, learners will learn how to brainstorm, outline, write, and proofread an informational or persuasive essay designed for 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade learners.

Homework
1 hour per week. Each week, learners will be given an assignment that will guide them through that portion of the essay writing process. Depending on the week, the assignment should take about 15-30 minutes in addition to watching the 5-15 minute class video. The essay body writing week (week 4) will require more time.
Assessment
Learners can be given a formal grade by request before class begins.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this self-paced (flex) (no live meetings) class, students will learn the basics of how to write an essay from start to finish. Each week, we will focus on a different aspect of the writing process. Learners can choose any topic that most interests them for their essay.

Week 1: Brainstorming
Week 2: Topic Sentence & Introduction
Week 3: Outline
Week 4: Writing the Body
Week 5: Conclusion
Week 6: Proofread and Edit

Each week, Miss Jen will provide an instructional video varying in length (5 minutes to 15 minutes) depending on the topic of the week. 

Miss Jen will provide an assignment with worksheets and handouts that will provide essential information for the weekly topic. Example: During the brainstorming week, Miss Jen will provide multiple brainstorming templates. Learners can print the templates or draw/write them on their own. 

Each week, learners can submit their weekly assignment for personalized feedback. 

Throughout the 6 weeks, learners will focus on one essay topic and will perfect the writing process for this one topic.

Students will learn the basics of how to write an essay and will be given a chance to practice and focus on each aspect of the essay writing process with personalized feedback from the teacher.

Lesson 1:
Brainstorming
 Students will learn how to brainstorm ideas for a piece of writing with the option to use many templates. 
Lesson 2:
Topic Sentence & Introduction
 Students will learn how to write a powerful topic sentence and engaging introduction. 
Lesson 3:
Outline
 Students will learn how to create an outline to organize their ideas before actually writing the paragraphs. 
Lesson 4:
Writing the Body
 Students will learn how to write the body of the paragraph from the outline.

Supply List
Handouts and worksheets will be provided each week. Learners can print these, complete them electronically, or draw/write their own in a personal notebook.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
