What's included

In this multi-day course your child will build early literacy skills that are the foundation of becoming a successful reader! Each week your child will be introduced to 2-4 (age appropriate) sight words, practice building words with short vowels, practice identifying the initial, medial and final sound in words, practice using reading strategies to read simple sentences and play games to strengthen these skills while having fun! The students will use chants, songs, kinesthetic movements and writing to learn the sight words. They will build short vowel words by hearing a word, identifying the sounds in isolation then writing the sounds on a whiteboard. Together we will blend and read each word. Then they will be asked to write a new word by changing one sound from the word on their boards to make the new word. For example, "How do we change 'cat' into 'cot'?", together we will identify the sound/letter to remove (a) and add the new sound/letter (o). The students will be shown sentences that contain the sight words and/or short vowel words from the lesson and we will read them together. Some reading strategies that your child will learn/practice are sounding out words, using a picture clue and thinking about what word would make sense in context. Below is an outline of the material that will be covered each week: Week 1: Sight Words - and, the, go Phonics/Word Work - Short a words (cvc) Reading Strategy - Say the Sounds and Stretch it Out!
