In this class, students will use their knowledge of Pokémon names to recognize phonetic patterns in English words, so they can read and spell unfamiliar words with confidence.

Class experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Students will learn how to:

... Link phonetically regular nonsense words (which is what Pokémon names basically are) to real words, so they can read and spell unfamiliar words with similar patterns.

... Spell and pronounce unfamiliar words by breaking them into syllables and sounds, and how to use those syllables to build other words.

... How to use three basic spelling patterns as clues to reading unfamiliar words without frustration or guessing

...Why some words follow English spelling patterns... and why some words DON'T! (and how to use that knowledge!)

... How to "sound from the inside out" when "sounding it out" doesn't cut it.
I'm a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (SLDS), certified by the Center for Effective Reading, and trained specifically in dyslexia-focused teletherapy through the IDA-accredited Lexercise platform. I've been teaching readers of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds since 1996. I'm trained and experienced in Lindamood-Bell Learning Systems, F.A.S.T Phonics and Words In Color among others. I've taught in small groups, one-on-one, and in the classroom.
I survived all of one year as a public school teacher, so I know how hard it is differentiate instruction! But I've also taught exclusively online for the last four years... so I know what's possible.
This class can benefit all learners, but it's designed for Dyslexic and struggling readers. As a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Therapist, I use Orton-Gillingham Based techniques to link sounds, speech, and spelling.
A small whiteboard, an eraser and a thick, fresh, black marker.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
In class, I may use search engines to find pictures or videos of the words or concepts we're exploring. For "Charmalian" for example, we might look up "charred marshmallows" or space "alians."
I'll use a random word generator for targeted fluency practice, and search engines to explore images that will build connections between words and images.
