Class Experience

In this one-time course students will learn and practice basic drawing and coloring skills. We will talk about specific drawing and coloring tips such as looking for the middle lines and basic shapes to guide us as we draw.

To begin class, we usually chat for the first 5 minutes as we let other learners log in and check to make sure their technology is working. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite Squishmallow, toy, art that they have made, or anything that they might like to show and share at the beginning of class and they will be given a chance to talk about it if they would like.

Next, students will see a variety of Squishmallows and we'll talk about some fun Squishmallows facts. Since students may be choosing a variety of different Squishmallows to draw, this may require slightly more independence than my other "step by step" drawing lessons (this varies on the number of students enrolled). I show students the main elements to get started and then help with specific challenges that arise as they draw. I know that some quieter students may not ask for help so I regularly check in with all of my students and see how they're doing and if I can help with anything. For younger or beginner students I recommend that they pick an easy or less detailed Squishmallow (such as an octopus, cat, mouse, rabbit, etc). Older or more advanced students might choose more detailed Squishmallows. Each artist works at their own pace, some artists might focus on making one that they really take their time on while some speedier artists might make everyone's favorites or they could make their personal favorite in different sizes or with a background.

At the end of class students will also be given a chance to share their art with others while getting specific feedback and praise from the teacher.

FAQ/Policies

- ONE STUDENT PER SPOT. If enrolling multiple students, please register each of them. Multiple students appearing under the same spot will result in students being removed from the classroom.

- All my Outschool classes have a limited refund policy. Transfers, no-shows, late arrivals, cancellations, refunds and make-up requests CANNOT be accommodated within 24 hours of class time. No exceptions. Class recordings are available upon request for missed sections if the class proceeds with other students.

- Teachers on Outschool are independent contractors who cannot control nor troubleshoot technical issues with Zoom or the Outschool platform. Please test your connection with your device in advance of class time and contact Outschool directly at support@outschool.com for help with technical issues.

- Live sections with no present learners are cancelled after 10 minutes of class time.

- I do not offer sibling discounts for public classes at this time, however, I do offer a small discount for private classes when registering 2 or more students for a month or more. Please message me for more details.

- These are WYSIWIG art classes: What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get! All thumbnails, promotional materials, class resources, and in-class drawings are original art produced by Marie (the teacher). Students are often offered a variety of reference images and resources from popular art styles to choose so they can draw in their preferred style, but special focus is paid to developing student's original art skills and not simply copying another artist. All images, drawings or other art resources are never taken from other artists to use as promotional materials.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic drawing and coloring skills. Some of these skills include sketching lightly and then darkening the areas that we like, looking for things in the middle, using a pencil as a guide. We will also talk about simple coloring or shading techniques.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Marie, a full-time teacher and artist. I love a wide variety of art and discovering new ways to foster learning through creativity. I believe having fun and laughing while learning is important because it encourages self confidence and joy. I always try my best to make my classes fun, engaging, and a welcoming experience for every student.

I have taught classroom Art as a certified educator in US schools for 10+ years from ages pre-school through high school, as well as teaching & tutoring in single and group lessons for Art, ESL, SPED, Social Studies, Math, Science, Technology and gifted students. I have also designed and taught in a number of summer camps. In 2017, I was awarded Teacher of the Year honors at my school. I have taught individual and small-group art lessons both online and in my community since 2018, as well as creating and selling my own art to buyers on every continent (well, except Antarctica!)

I have a BA in Education, and have continued professional certification experience through outside professional training programs, conferences and seminars.

In my spare time I enjoy nature, travel, games, and playing with my dogs. I have transitioned to full-time, online private teaching as I believe it allows teachers to develop curriculum which better meets the needs and interests of today's students by directly engaging with the students more thoroughly. The individual and small group settings allow teachers to cater lessons to students needs and goals intuitively. Private teaching online has also allowed me more time and flexibility to spend with my family. I truly believe online learning is a critical part of the future of education, and I'm excited to share some class time with you!
