Does your learner love dinosaurs and Earth's prehistory? In this course, we'll learn all about a wide variety of dinosaurs and explore the field of paleontology! Paleontology is the study of ancient life and the science of Earth's development. Over 12 sessions, we'll explore a wide variety of topics including the geological timescale, types of fossils, the role of paleontologists, timeline of life on earth, and dinosaurs from the Cambrian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous and other periods. Below is a week-by-week outline for this course: Class 1: Different types of fossils Class 2: The Cambrian to Silurian period dinosaurs Class 3: The history and timeline of life on Earth Class 4: The Permian period dinosaurs Class 5: Five extinction periods of Earth's past Class 6: The Triassic period of dinosaurs Class 7: The early Jurassic dinosaurs Class 8: The middle period Jurassic dinosaurs Class 9: The late period Jurassic dinosaurs Class 10: The Cretaceous period dinosaurs Class 11: The Paleogene period dinosaurs Class 12: The Miocene period dinosaurs and new recent discoveries This course was developed by Prof. Mark Baraket in partnership with staff at the renowned American Museum of Natural History in New York City. This course includes fossils and paleontology educational materials from the extensive collection of the American Museum of Natural History.
Learning Goals
Learning goals include exploring the timeline of life on earth, the role of paleontologists, types of fossils, how fossils are dated and a wide variety of dinosaurs from the Cambrian to Miocene periods.
