Does your student struggle to just “get through” assigned math problems? Or maybe they’ve learned the prescribed steps to find an answer, but are bored by the calculations because they have no idea what they’re actually doing or why? Too often, math is approached by students (and unfortunately some teachers!) as something to just memorize and “get through” to get an answer. This is doing our students such a disservice, as it inevitably leads to frustration, boredom and a feeling of wanting to give up on math. But math is all around us--it’s about problem solving, creativity, and looking at things from multiple perspectives. Math should be relatable, meaningful, satisfying and fun! This is exactly my aim for this 5-week “Deep Dive” math review course! Through interactive, relatable problem solving I will (re)introduce foundational math concepts including number sense and properties, the four basic operations, place value, factors and multiples, divisibility, and fractions as division problems. Students will gain a deep understanding of numbers and how they relate to each other, and really start to “see” these relations and how to approach problems using this sight and understanding. We will reinforce and practice these concepts through fun songs, games and puzzles. One major focus or goal of these games will be building fluency and confidence in basic multiplication facts, because math becomes so much easier and more fun once these are mastered! At the end of the week, I will provide personalized links to games and activities so that students can continue to practice throughout the rest of the summer! Now is the time to ensure your student makes the necessary connections to unlock a deep understanding (and joy!) of the foundational math concepts they will need next school year and beyond! Studies have shown that a 5th grader’s understanding of important concepts such as division and fractions, as well as fluency in multiplication, are key indicators of their success in middle school, high school and beyond. Let’s set our kids up for success! Here’s what our schedule will look like: Week 1: Numbers have identities just like we do! --Focus on numbers 0 and 1 (discover rules for multiplying) --Identity Properties of multiplication and addition --Place Value --multiples of 10 (counting 0’s) Week 2: Let’s be fair! --Even/odd numbers --Focus on numbers 2, 4, and 8 (multiples): what things come in 2's, 4's, and 8's? --Skip-counting songs and geometric circle number patterns Week 3: Three is a Magic Number! --All about 3 (what things come in 3’s or have three parts?) --Focus on numbers 3 and 6 --Skip counting songs and geometric circle number patterns Week 4: Special 9's and Lucky 7's! --Finger trick for multiplying by 9, multiples of 9 --All about 7 (Using math in our daily lives--Calendar math) --Multiples of 7 --Skip-counting songs and geometric circle number patterns Week 5: Give me 5! --Using what you know --Divisibility rules for 5 --Finding common multiples and factors --Review
Learning Goals
Students will gain a deep understanding of numbers and how they relate to each other, and really start to “see” these relations and how to approach problems using this sight and understanding. Students will move toward mastery and fluency of basic multiplication facts, which will prepare them for success in math in 4th, 5th grade, 6th grade and beyond!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Megan and I'm not embarrassed to say it--I love math! And even more than working on math myself, I love teaching math! Teaching math to both elementary and middle school aged kids is my passion. I specialize in mastery math which allows students to focus deeply on each aspect of math until full understanding is achieved. I combine concrete teaching, making math visual and “seeable” with conceptual math, ensuring students can both understand the concepts as well as the concrete applications. I also create opportunities to apply what we are learning to real world scenarios.
My other passion involves thinking, acting, travelling and teaching globally. Specifically in terms of teaching, I enjoy teaching ESL/EFL classes to students from all over the world! These two passions--math and foreign/second language may not seem very connected, but in my view they actually are! I view math as a language and my goal as a teacher is to help students interpret and translate the language of math into their own deep understanding of concepts. Similarly, language certainly also has a mathematical aspect (such as syntax/grammar), and I enjoy analyzing and teaching this side of language as well.
I have worked as a teacher in a wide range of settings for over 20 years--from elementary classroom teacher in Washington, DC, to visiting high school teacher near Kampala, Uganda, to individual tutor in the Bay Area, California homeschool community. I hold two Masters degrees-- one in Education and one it TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I continue to seek out and participate in numerous academic and professional development opportunities--from workshops, webinars and conferences, to self-study of academic publications.
Most recently, I have been teaching full-year math courses to 2nd through 9th graders, utilizing a broad range of math curricula--Singapore Math, Math-U-See, Saxon Math, Teaching Textbooks, Beast Academy, and unique combinations of these. I have also created my own resources and lessons to personalize instruction and offer enrichment or targeted tutoring. I rely heavily on visuals, manipulatives and relating math to real world situations in order to help my neurodiverse math learners focus on meaningful problem solving. I have worked with many neurodiverse students with differences such as ADHD, auditory processing disorder, language processing disorder, and dyslexia and have enjoyed discovering the unique ways to adapt my teaching to each student according to his or her personal learning styles. I also use math games, math puzzles, and math tricks as fun incentives and ways to overcome both generalized and math-specific anxiety.
I have a passion for creating and evaluating curricula and teaching practices through an equity and social justice lens by centering culturally and historically responsive pedagogy. I center these both in my daily lessons (for example by referencing and learning about female mathematicians or scientists of color), as well in my general approach. I strive to focus on the process-oriented experience of discovering and learning math. I believe that math is a language that already lives within every student, and it is my job (and joy!) to cultivate it and create connections with them. I am excited to share my passion with more students through Outschool!
