Country Studies & Geography in the News
This is an ongoing twice-a-week hybrid course where we learn about the countries of the world as well as international current events, with an emphasis on Geography
This is an ongoing class which meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays. On TUESDAYS, we will study about the physical and human geography of one country, with an emphasis on the physical geography. We will label maps of the subject country and its continent. We will discuss important topics as we do so. Geography is an extremely broad subject which overlaps with many other subjects such as Earth Science, Government, Economics, History, Current Events, etc.. Depending on the country we may touch on...
Students will gain a better understanding of the physical geography, culture, economies, history, governments, etc. of countries all over the world. They will learn about international current events and the geography involved in those events.
Certified Secondary Social Science Teacher (Geography, Economics, Government & History) BS in Secondary Education - Social Science Composite ESL Certified & former ESL student AAS in Hotel & Restaurant Management I am a former high school Geography teacher and middle school World Studies teacher. I have ten years of experience teaching in the public schools in Texas. I was deeply involved in my sons' educations for 18 years. I have been an Outschool teacher since the end of 2020. My expertise is in Geography, Current Events, Economics, and the Culinary Arts. I have taught 4th, 6th, & 8th through 12th grades, including Geography, World Studies, Social Studies, Financial Literacy & ELAR. Informally, I have taught/modeled learners from birth to adults. I teach and have always taught Current Events whenever I teach Geography. Multiple perspectives are always discussed and examined. I am also a former inclusion teacher who worked side by side with special education teachers in my classroom. I fought for the inclusion of special education students into the regular classes way back in the 1990's. Back then, I was the only teacher in my high school who argued for the inclusion of special ed students into the regular classes. I currently teach 8 learners who are on the autism spectrum. I am a former unschooling mom who allowed her twins to be entirely self-directed and auto-didactic Below is a list of materials I use regularly. I am always on the lookout for new materials and will add new websites to the list below when I find them useful.
Learners will need a printer so they may print out their maps. Color printing is preferable, but not absolutely necessary. Colored pencils are used almost every week. Once a while, a ruler is used. I create all my lessons on Nearpod. Learners should be familiar with splitting their screen so they can view Nearpod on oneside of their monitor and Zoom on the other side.
Since we will cover international current events on Thursdays, there is a possibility some learners may choose to discuss ongoing wars (Ukraine), coup d'etats, deforestation (loss of habitat involving the loss/extinction of animals, etc.), famines (hunger & death, etc.).
I create all my lessons on Nearpod. No app is necessary. I provide the link in the chat at the beginning of class. This link will take the learner directly to the lesson. Learners will be asked to split their screen so they have Zoom on one side of their screen and Nearpod on the other side of their screen.
