Class Experience

Students will gain a better understanding of the physical geography, culture, economies, history, governments, etc. of countries all over the world. They will learn about international current events and the geography involved in those events.

I am a former high school Geography teacher and middle school World Studies teacher. I have ten years of experience teaching in the public schools in Texas. I was deeply involved in my sons' educations for 18 years. I have been an Outschool teacher since the end of 2020. My expertise is in Geography, Current Events, Economics, and the Culinary Arts. I have taught 4th, 6th, & 8th through 12th grades, including Geography, World Studies, Social Studies, Financial Literacy & ELAR. Informally, I have taught/modeled learners from birth to adults.

I teach and have always taught Current Events whenever I teach Geography. Multiple perspectives are always discussed and examined.

I am also a former inclusion teacher who worked side by side with special education teachers in my classroom. I fought for the inclusion of special education students into the regular classes way back in the 1990's. Back then, I was the only teacher in my high school who argued for the inclusion of special ed students into the regular classes. I currently teach 8 learners who are on the autism spectrum.
I am a former unschooling mom who allowed her twins to be entirely self-directed and auto-didactic

Below is a list of materials I use regularly. I am always on the lookout for new materials and will add new websites to the list below when I find them useful.

TUESDAYS - There is no homework for our Tuesday classes except voluntary research which they can share verbally in class. Students are expected to print out the appropriate maps and map locations for each of the countries prior to class. I will post the pdf file links to the classroom prior to each meeting. We will not always label all our map locations during class. Students are welcomed complete their map locations after class as homework.

THURSDAYS - Learners are expected to participate in class and present their Current Events topics. Since they are presenting in class, a certain amount of research will be required prior to each Thursday. Learner should inform Miss Mimi what their topics are at least 48 hours prior to class.
Learners will need a printer so they may print out their maps. Color printing is preferable, but not absolutely necessary. Colored pencils are used almost every week. Once a while, a ruler is used. I create all my lessons on Nearpod. Learners should be familiar with splitting their screen so they can view Nearpod on oneside of their monitor and Zoom on the other side.
TUESDAYS - All assessments are informal. These lessons are meant to be relaxing and are really just an introduction to the countries we will study since we only have 55 minutes. I will usually end the class with a short and fun quiz-like game.

THURSDAYS - All assessments are informal. These lessons are meant to be relaxing where we will share what we learned about certain international current events over the past week. I will usually end the class with a short and fun quiz-like game which will be made up of questions provided by the students.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Since we will cover international current events on Thursdays, there is a possibility some learners may choose to discuss ongoing wars (Ukraine), coup d'etats, deforestation (loss of habitat involving the loss/extinction of animals, etc.), famines (hunger & death, etc.).
I create all my lessons on Nearpod. No app is necessary. I provide the link in the chat at the beginning of class. This link will take the learner directly to the lesson.

Learners will be asked to split their screen so they have Zoom on one side of their screen and Nearpod on the other side of their screen.
